The Footage Ends With A Coming Soon Banner.

Story Highlight
  • A former BioWare employee has leaked the first trailer of Mass Effect 5.
  • The footage only features CGI shots of the project, with no gameplay revealed in the teaser.
  • However, the trailer does end with a coming soon banner, indicating that development was progressing.

BioWare’s sudden demise has taken over the gaming world, with developers and fans alike expressing sorrow at the legendary studio’s closure. EA’s disheartening announcement has not gone down well in the community, with CD Projekt Red’s CEO saying that BioWare’s end is a sad day for the industry.

The developer’s upcoming project, Mass Effect 5, has ended up as collateral damage in the whole ordeal, with the studio announcing that production has now come to a halt after years of development. However, thanks to disgruntled ex-developers, fans have gotten their first look at the project through a leaked trailer.

Why it matters: The trailer is proof that the development of Mass Effect 5 was progressing gradually. However, only being able to showcase a CGI trailer six years into development doesn’t go unpunished in the modern gaming world.

Following excessive fan demand, a former BioWare employee has leaked a fully finished trailer for Mass Effect 5 on the game’s subreddit. The teaser, uploaded via a burner account, opens with a disclaimer, stating that the footage uses pre-production assets and was crafted in-engine by a small development team.

Unsurprisingly, the trailer is mostly CGI shots and doesn’t feature gameplay, only revealing at the end that the game could have been titled Mass Effect Universe. Interestingly, despite the disclaimer at the start, the footage ends with a coming soon banner, indicating that the production wasn’t in extremely early stages.

The trailer was leaked after a post on the Mass Effect subreddit claimed that footage had been developed months ago and was ready to be released, with around 50 people working on the project in Austin.

Mass Effect
Developers stated earlier this year that the studio was busy developing Mass Effect 5.

Considering the polished nature of the trailer and developers claiming earlier this year that BioWare was busy developing Mass Effect 5, it’s safe to say that production was moving forward. However, for a game that began development in 2020, entering pre-production in 2025 isn’t a major sign of confidence in the gaming industry.

Do you think Mass Effect 5 would have been a big hit for BioWare? Did EA make the wrong decision by cancelling the game? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
