Key RAM Terms To Keep An Eye On
It is very important to make sure that you get the best possible RAM for your system, and that’s why you should know all the technical jargon related to them:
- CAS Latency (CL): It refers to the number of clock cycles it takes between a request for data and when the data is actually available. This metric is commonly used to assess the speed of RAM.
- Frequency: Denotes the rate at which data moves to and from the memory. This is typically measured in megahertz (MHz) or gigahertz (GHz), with higher frequencies indicating potentially superior performance.
- DIMM Slots: These are the slots on a motherboard designed to accommodate Dual In-Line Memory Modules (DIMMs), facilitating an upgrade in the computer’s RAM capacity.
- EXPO: It is a feature developed by AMD that enables RAM to operate at higher clock speeds and with optimized timings, enhancing performance. This feature is especially prevalent in RAM designed for gaming and high-performance applications.
My Approach To Find The Best RAM
In order to round up my top picks for the best RAM for Ryzen 7 5700X3D, my team and I conducted several tests. Here’s what we focused on the most:
- Stock Performance: I paid the most attention to the stock performance of these kits, including their frequency and timings. Since my goal was to find the best RAM for an AMD CPU, I found that lower CAS latency values substantially enhance system responsiveness.
- Overclocking Potential: To unleash the full potential of the Ryzen 7 5700X3D, I prioritized selecting RAM with robust overclocking capabilities, particularly those offering EXPO support. My team and I manually overclocked these RAMs to push performance boundaries further. In this process, my preference leaned towards RAM kits characterized by exceptional overclocking headroom.
- Thermals and Efficiency: I scrutinized my picks based on their heat management efficiency. As such, having proper heat spreaders and low power consumption was a must-have.
- Design and Build Quality: I carefully chose those kits that look beautiful and have aggressive design elements with RGB lighting. I also made sure they were of high quality because this affects how reliable and long-lasting the RAM will be.
- Compatibility: Making sure everything worked together was a key part of choosing my recommendations. I preferred to choose those kits that are meant for Ryzen builds. I also thought about the ability to upgrade in the future to make sure the RAM I picked would not only be good for now but also for any upgrades I might want to do later.
