- EA recently announced that it’s shutting down BioWare and canceling Mass Effect.
- Fans filed a petition to save the franchise, which has now garnered 300K signatures.
- EA is believed to have canceled the IP and hasn’t shifted it to another team.
BioWare had been working on a new Mass Effect title when EA announced that it was shuttering the studio and canceling the title along with it. Fans have been furious about this and have even filed a petition to reverse the decision.
The petition got a lot of traction when it was filed, and is now closing in on a massive 300K signatures. Recently, BioWare employees leaked the canceled Mass Effect 5 trailer, which led to a huge surge in the signatures.
Why it matters: The last game in the franchise was nearly 10 years ago, and fans were looking forward to the next installment. Unfortunately, EA didn’t even announce whether it wants to retain the IP or totally cancel it.

The Save Mass Effect petition on Change.org now has about 280K signatures. It argues that the franchise holds a special place in the hearts of millions of players, and EA’s move threatens to leave the series in the dust.
Many expected that while they did close BioWare, they might shift the franchise to another studio. The now-shutdown studio had been lacking quality in recent years, but the prospect of a new Mass Effect was still exciting.

However, the future now seems quite bleak. Petitions generally don’t result in much, but seeing how much attention this one has garnered, maybe there is a chance that EA listens to the players and does bring it back.
