If EA’s Saudi Arabian buyout didn’t have enough opposition in the gaming world, the company certainly made a lot of new enemies after it closed down BioWare. The studio’s demise has reverberated loudly in the gaming world, with developers from all around the globe expressing sorrow at the legendary developer’s end.
BioWare’s upcoming game, Mass Effect 5, was also canned in the process, despite being in production since 2020. However, fans aren’t letting go of the franchise easily, and a petition to save the IP is already doing the rounds on the internet.
Why it matters: Mass Effect is a legendary IP built by an iconic studio responsible for shaping modern RPG gaming. Saving the series is a small favor that the gaming world owes BioWare.

At the time of writing, a petition titled #SaveMassEffect on Change.org has garnered 49,204 verified signatures since EA announced the closure of BioWare. Posted by Joe Smith on October 21, the petition demands that EA keep the franchise alive in one way or another, presenting two possible solutions.
The gaming giant can either commit to Mass Effect, providing proper funding and time to develop a new installment in the franchise that meets the high standards of previous entries. However, if EA doesn’t want to do anything with the IP, the petition demands that the company sell it to another studio that shares the passion and love players have for Mass Effect.
In the last 24 hours alone, over 40,000 players have signed the petition, highlighting the cultural impact of the series on a worldwide player base that wants to see this piece of gaming history continue in the form of new installments.

With the leaked trailer for Mass Effect 5 showcasing that development was finally progressing, fans are pestering EA to let the franchise live. Considering how the company previously wanted to sell the IP alongside Dragon Age, there is some hope for fans, but only time will tell if Captain Shepard will return to the gaming medium.
