Is This The End of Consoles As We Know it?

Story Highlight
  • PlayStation creator says there’s a risk that AI could lead to the demise of consoles.
  • He says the prices are insane and the tech is evolving, so they might become obsolete.
  • He thinks hardware might get outdated since most can’t afford it anyway now.

The console market is in a weird spot right now. Once known for their affordability and ease of access, the AI-led memory crisis has pushed prices extremely high. The MSRP was supposed to be $399-$499, but that is no longer the case.

Amid all this, the creator of the PlayStation has warned that, due to AI and high prices, there is a “very real danger” that we could be looking at the ultimate demise of consoles. He said this is unhealthy for the mass market.

Why it matters: Recent reports indicate that the next-gen consoles will cross the $1,000 mark, putting them in a category that mostly enthusiasts will buy, which could push most people away from them.

PlayStation creator thinks consoles could become obsolete due to high prices and AI

Talking to The Game Business, Ken Kutaragi claimed that there is a danger that AI could lead to the death of consoles. He stated that gaming PCs now cost as much as cars, so these things are beyond the mass market.

Currently, the machines (consoles) are super expensive. It’s not a healthy situation. The age may be coming where we don’t need any console. It’s a very real danger.

Next-gen is already expected to top $1,000

Kutaragi talked about how the market has evolved over the years. Gemini and other AI have become so great that they make things a lot easier without needing expensive hardware, which could make consoles outdated.

There have been debates already that these high prices could push people away from hardware, and push them to cloud gaming. So, if the rumored $1,000+ prices are true for next-gen, we could be headed in that direction.
