Fans Reward PlayStation With Its Best Sales Month In A Year Despite Threatening Boycott

Marvel's Wolverine Was The Best-Selling Game In The US This September.

Story Highlight
  • Despite many threatening to boycott Sony, the company recorded its best sales month in the US since May 2025.
  • PS5 led the hardware charts in sales this September while other consoles saw diminishing returns.
  • Marvel’s Wolverine also became the best-selling game in the US last month.

These last few months have easily been the hardest on PlayStation’s PR department. Ever since Sony announced it will stop producing physical discs, fans have been constantly criticising the gaming giant, with the backlash only getting worse after PlayStation cancelled Hideo Kojima’s Physint.

From boycotts to petitions, gamers have tried everything in their arsenal to hurt the Japanese company, and even developers have expressed their disdain for Sony. However, the gaming giant hasn’t felt a considerable impact on its commercial performance, and recent metrics suggest that sales have actually improved.

Why it matters: With the wider public most likely unaware of Sony’s recent fumbles, it seems like the Japanese giant won’t be reversing its decision anytime soon if sales keep increasing despite online backlash.

September 2026 U.S. Projected Top 10 Best-Selling Games Ranked on Physical & Full Game Digital Dollar Sales (Excludes Mobile and Digital Add-On Content)

According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, Sony recorded its best sales month in over a year this September, topping both hardware and software charts in the US. Compared to last year, PS5 dollar sales grew by 43% in the country, with the console reaching its highest share in the hardware market since May 2025.

On the other hand, spending on Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 decreased, as the console sector saw a 3% decrease in unit sales nationwide. However, the PS5 didn’t feel the impact, leading the hardware market in both unit sales and dollar sales this September, selling 22% more units year-on-year.

Moreover, the release of Marvel’s Wolverine also helped Sony top the software charts, with the action-adventure title becoming the best-selling game in the US this September. Despite criticism and online backlash, the Insomniac title generated the highest launch-month revenue for a Sony title since Helldivers 2 in February 2024.

Marvel's Wolverine Logan
Despite intense backlash online, Marvel’s Wolverine has managed to become the best-selling game this September.

Considering how fans online were planning a PlayStation boycott at the start of September, which would go on until the company realises its mistake, these sales metrics might be proof that players standing firm to bring back physical discs are a vocal minority.

Do you think players should still buy new PS5 consoles considering the company’s stance on physical games? Will you purchase a PS5 to play GTA 6? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
