Redefining FPS Control: What The Ideal FPS Controller Could Look Like

Story Highlights
  • The ideal FPS controller would combine the precision of a mouse with the movement control of a gamepad.
  • Charlie Pyott’s custom controller design incorporates a trackball for aiming and a standard gamepad layout for movement.
  • While the controller shows promise in performance, the complexities involved in its construction may hinder commercial availability.

Why Do People Prefer A Mouse And Keyboard?

CORSAIR Scimitar Elite Wireless MMO Mouse

If you try to get a controller the size of your entire screen, it’ll be very inconvenient. To deal with such issues, companies map their movement to smaller canvases, opting instead to increase the distance travelled with speed or some other gimmick.

This is what makes the mouse so much better than controllers when it comes to accuracy. With a mouse, you can flick to a new target with heightened accuracy. If you’re using a controller, the sensitivity would either be too slow for a flick, or too fast to be in control.

The mouse lets you dynamically change sensitivity depending on how far away you choose to move it, giving you free rein over what amount of control you want over your aim.

What Do Controllers Offer?

However, a mouse and keyboard combo is not that great when it comes to movement, due to a lack of an analog stick for movement. The 4-directional movement keys can at most give you 8 directions to move.

While certainly better than the previous 4, it can make performing complex movement tasks more difficult than on a controller. This advantage in movement is what lets console players keep their accuracy up, by pairing their aim with their movement.

What Could The Ideal Controller Look Like?

An ideal controller would have to have a movement analog stick, but that’s the easy part. Mapping the area a mouse needs to move on the limited space a controller provides is a very difficult task.

However, Charlie from Pyott Designs brings a very genius idea to the table, inspired by old Steam controllers, as well as his own ingenuity.

The Inspiration

Prototype Steam Controller (By Valve)

In his Ultimate FPS Controller Design & Build video, Charlie mentions how some early Steam controller ideas made use of a trackball instead of another analog stick for the aim.

While the idea was ultimately abandoned due to complexities, Charlie made use of it to create his own controller. There were certain problems, such as fitting the hardware while still keeping the trackball, which needed some ingenious problem-solving to figure out.

The Build

Finished FPS Controller

The finalized design made use of the trackball, letting the entire right side of the controller empty only for it. The left side was much like any other controller, albeit with a few neat additions that made the controller even better.

Instead of creating a new controller setup from scratch, an existing controller was broken down. The motherboard and other internal parts of the controller were used.

The main issue faced was the lack of space within the controller’s short container for all the necessary hardware. Even in normal controllers, lots of optimization is required to fit it all in. With the trackball cutting that space down to half, it becomes impossible.

While a full-fledged company with the funds to optimize and research its own hardware to be sold for commercial use could certainly try another way, Charlie got the innovative idea to use an external box to hold the extra parts.

The Performance

Comparison between custom controller, mouse, and a traditional controller

Keep in mind that this kind of controller is completely new, so inexperience was a severe disadvantage when comparing it with others. Still, as seen from Charlie’s tests, it performed remarkably well.

It performed much better than controllers in certain setups, and even caught up to and left mouse performance behind in a small amount of tests. Overall, the complexities involved might never see a similar controller up for commercial use, but it is the optimal way to play shooters.

Sony Should Remove The PSN Requirement Once And For All

Story Highlight
  • The PlayStation Network requirement for Sony PC Ports is criticized by the fandom a lot.
  • Due to this requirement, PlayStation games aren’t even available in most countries.
  • So, instead of suffering huge losses, Sony should simply remove this unnecessary requirement once and for all.

There are many games released by Sony that have a massive fan following. PlayStation games are often praised more, mainly because of their quality. That is precisely why PC fans are waiting for the exclusive PS games to launch on their preferred platform

The PC market is arguably massive, way bigger than consoles altogether. So, launching a game on a PC greatly benefits Sony, too. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case due to the PSN requirement, which isn’t available in most countries.

Due to that, many PC players can’t even play those games, which is bad for Sony and them. This hurts the game’s sales a lot, which is why Sony should just remove the PSN requirement.

Why it matters: The PlayStation Network isn’t available in the majority of the world, which is why Sony’s recent PC port has been so underwhelming.

The Whole PSN Controversy

God of War Ragnarok Underwhelming PC Launch
PSN Requirement Has Caused Underwhelming Launch For Games Like God of War Ragnarok

PC gamers are well known for not liking to make accounts in order to play video games. Many games were review-bombed for this particular reason, and yes, I know this is really toxic. However, many of them do tend to make the accounts in order to play the game they want to play.

This means that gamers are willing to fulfil this requirement, but what if you can’t even create an account in your country? That is exactly the main issue with the PlayStation Network; it isn’t even available in most of the world, so the gaming giant is missing out on a lot of sales.

I do agree that fans are going to give negative reviews on the games that require you to create accounts. As a gamer, I find that annoying, too, as even if it doesn’t take much time, it is pretty inconvenient. Why can’t I just boot up my PC and launch the game? It really should be that simple.

However, Sony doesn’t seem to understand and seems to be ignoring this main issue. I don’t understand why it hasn’t addressed it yet, as the recent PC ports were really underwhelming.

The Recent Examples

Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2, One of The Most Successful Releases of 2024, Suffer From This Requirement, Too

As I mentioned before, due to the PSN requirement, the recent PC Ports performed really poorly on Steam. Helldivers 2 is one of the most successful games this year, and it garnered a massive fandom quickly.

However, Sony decided to surprise the fans with the PlayStation Network requirement that wasn’t disclosed to them. The game was already performing so well, but after some time, Sony decided to stop it from becoming even more successful.

After this requirement was made mandatory, you can see what happened to the game. Helldivers 2 then saw a massive drop in players as it was not available in most countries. While Sony promised that the game would be returned, it didn’t.

Recent releases like Final Fantasy 16 and God of War Ragnarok suffered the same fate. You can clearly see how underwhelming FF16’s release was. Sure, it had more players than Final Fantasy 7 remake, but it wasn’t very pleasant for a mainline FF game.

A similar happened with God of War Ragnarok. You can see how well its prequel performed, but due to this meaningless requirement, this game also suffered a lot on PC. It doesn’t seem like the tech giant will remove the PSN requirement from its future PC ports, but I think that would be pretty stupid.

Please, Sony, Just Remove This Requirement

Sony has already hurt these franchises a lot. The developers work hard enough to launch these games on the PC, and if the sales aren’t good, then the studio also receives less profit.

This is Sony shooting itself in the foot, which won’t turn out well. Due to this requirement, many players crack the game, which, of course, isn’t justified, but what can they do when the game isn’t available in their region?

The gaming giant needs to resolve this issue as soon as possible, as this decision will help nothing other than PlayStation. By doing so, the PC gamers will also be happy, and the tech giant will be able to benefit a lot, garnering a massive fandom.

However, it doesn’t seem that simple, as Sony seems to be fixated on increasing its PS Plus players. While the numbers will increase gradually, it will hurt the brand in the long run.

Phantom Blade Zero Impressions From TGS Are Really Positive

Story Highlight
  • Phantom Blade Zero had a playable demo at the Tokyo Game Show 2024 yesterday.
  • The early impressions of the game seem to be positive, with excellent performance on PS5.
  • It will follow Black Myth: Wukong’s path and be a PlayStation exclusive at launch.

Phantom Blade Zero is shaping up to be the Chinese developer’s next big action game. Developed by S-Game, it had a playable demo at the Tokyo Game Show 2024. The game’s early impressions seem to be very positive

Why it matters: Chinese developers have made a great identity for themselves since the launch of Black Myth: Wukong. With Phantom Blade, it seems that reputation is going to be enhanced even further.

Phantom Blade Zero
Phantom Blade Zero’s early impressions were positive after the TGS demo

The playable demo on the PS5 reportedly performed well. Even for a game that’s still in development, there were hardly any frame drops and consistent performance overall. It also has a performance mode, enabling 60 FPS on PS5.

Phantom Blade isn’t as hard as your traditional souls-like game. It has been kept relatively easy to reach a wider audience. The actual Kung-Fu masters have done the mo-cap, so the combat feels natural and true.

The demo had a few boss battles that demonstrated the combat well. You can swap your weapons during combat and use them to create chain attacks for combos. The combat overall seems to be inspired by Sekiro and the Ninja Gaiden series

The combat is reportedly very fluid and feels very natural

In addition, there is a huge variety of weapons as well. While, like other action games, it relies on parrying and dodging, it can be played using stealth as well. Overall, the gameplay seems fluid, and the game looks almost ready to launch

The visuals are also very stunning, and the animations are quite well done. However, the release date is still a mystery. A rumor tipped it for a fall 2026 release, but considering the game is in such a great state already, it might launch a lot earlier

Unfortunately, the game will skip Xbox at launch just like Black Myth: Wukong. This garnered a lot of controversy when an S-Game employee allegedly said nobody needs Xbox.

Death Stranding 2 Has The Best Photo Mode In Any Game To Date

Story Highlight
  • Hideo Kojima has recently showcased the Photo Mode for Death Stranding 2, and it’s looking incredibly impressive.
  • This Photo Mode is being hailed as the best ever seen in a game so far.
  • The mode is even being referred to as a “Video Mode” due to the life infused by the characters through their humorous poses, making it feel more dynamic and engaging.

Death Stranding 2 is one of the most highly anticipated upcoming titles in the gaming world, fueled by the tremendous reception the first game received.

Since its announcement, we’ve heard a lot about the game, much of it coming directly from its creative director and writer, Hideo Kojima.

Most recently, during the Tokyo Game Show 2024, Kojima revealed another exciting feature—the game’s incredibly impressive Photo Mode, which could arguably be the best of its kind in gaming history.

Why it matters: The attention to detail in features like Photo Mode shows that the developers are willing to go to great lengths to ensure player satisfaction.

It feels more like a “Video Mode” than a traditional Photo Mode, thanks to the character animations in the frame. The humorous poses also add a layer of realism to the game, making the feature stand out even more.

Additionally, the stunning visuals serve as the cherry on top for the Photo Mode, with the final image looking truly remarkable. As Kojima himself claims, the visuals are expected to improve even further in the final game.

Features like this highlight how well the developers understand their audience, and it also suggests how outstanding the game could be, given the amount of effort put into something like Photo Mode alone.

Death-Stranding-2-Photo-Mode-Snap
Kojima Yet Again Exceeds Expectations With The New Photo Mode

Over the years, many games have significantly enhanced their Photo Modes, but Kojima seems to have taken this feature to a whole new level.

Death Stranding 2 is shaping up to set a new benchmark for future titles and will reportedly be amongst the first titles to showcase the PS5 Pro’s potential. The game is slated for 2025, with Kojima stating the exact release date will be revealed that year, potentially early 2025.

The original Death Stranding performed exceptionally well, and it remains to be seen if the sequel can surpass that success; however, with Kojima at the helm—who rarely disappoints—we are very optimistic.

Star Wars Outlaws Director Will Soon Start Focusing on The Division 3

Story Highlight
  • Star Wars Outlaws is currently in a polishing state due to bugs and many other issues.
  • The game’s director will be moving on to The Division 3 in just a month or so.
  • There is not much information currently available about the next game in the Division series except that it is in development.

Star Wars Outlaws was recently released, but it turned out to be a disappointment for both the fans and the developer. While it didn’t meet the fans’ expectations, it also didn’t meet Ubisoft’s sales expectations

The gaming giant is now focusing on polishing this game and releasing some updates so fans can have a better experience. This game will also be released on Steam on 21 November.

So, the developers are now focusing on polishing the game, but its director has revealed that in just a month or so, he will be shifting his focus to The Division 3

Why it matters: After Star Wars Outlaws, Massive Entertainment was supposed to focus on the next title in the Division series, but it now has to polish the game to perfection.

The-Division-2
The next Division Game In The Franchise Is In Development Right Now.

In a recent interview with Game File, Julian Gerighty, the co-director of both previous instalments in The Division series, has revealed that he will continue his role as executive producer in a month or so.

In the interview, Gerighty talked about what the team is going to fix, and it seems like the developers will be working on the title for quite some time. However, he doesn’t intend to keep working on this title as in a month or so, he aims to shift his focus to The Division 3.

The Division is a massive series and has a lot of potential. The last mainline title in the series was released in 2019 so it has been a long time since the fandom has been waiting for a new one.

The Division Heartland
While Massive Entertainment is Busy With Star Wars Outlaws, It Will Soon Shift Its Focus To The Division 3

Unfortunately, there isn’t much known about the game except that it is in development. Due to Star Wars Outlaws, the studio might not have been giving this game its full focus, and even now, it might not be able to.

Gerighty also said in the interview that in his stead, a “very seasoned Massive people” will continue to work on the recent Star Wars title. So, we will likely get more information regarding the upcoming Division game soon.

Don’t Lag Behind: The Critical Role of Software Updates

Story Highlights
  • Software updates play a vital role in keeping our devices safe from security threats, maintaining optimal performance, and revamping the looks and features of the system.
  • It is important to update your devices timely to minimize risks of data breaches, glitches, and poor functioning.
  • Wait 10 to 12 days after a new update rolls out before installing it on your devices.

Whether you use a PC, mobile phone, or any other device, keeping it up-to-date with the latest software versions is critical. If delayed, some of the features of your device may not function at their best.

About Software Updates

Each device is operated through a certain operating system, for instance, iOS, Android, and Windows. The developers are continually rolling out newer updates as they spot room for improvements. Such updates commonly enhance security, improve existing features, add newer functions, increase compatibility, and more.

Why You Should Keep The Software Updated?

Understanding how software updates keep your device safe and secure against looming threats is important. Despite their importance, many users delay the installation of these updates.

Avoid Software Malfunction

For instance, iOS 16.5 was pending on my iPhone, and I delayed the installation. Consequently, some features malfunctioned, like the Calls app was glitching and WhatsApp lagged to the point that I had to reopen the app after every 2 to 3 minutes. I immediately installed the pending updates and restarted the phone.

Doing so eliminated all the recurring glitches. Hence, this is one way developers prompt us to install the latest software on our devices.

Keep The Device Protected

Often, there are security gaps in operating systems that hackers and cybercriminals can exploit to gain access to your device. Regular security updates ensure no such risks exist and your device is protected with the latest technological features.

To further emphasize its necessity, let’s consider the WannaCry ransomware attack of May 2017. This cyberattack targeted computers running the outdated version of Microsoft Windows globally by exploiting a security breach. Note that Microsoft did fix this problem in the latest patch. However, users who failed to install it in time became victims of the attack.

Array Of New Features

Software updates bring with them a range of new features and visual improvements. After updating the software on a Samsung Galaxy A31, I noticed it now lets me play with different color themes. Updating the iPhone’s iOS also introduced some cool lockscreen looks, better fonts, and more customizations.

Should You Immediately Install The Updates?

While installing the software updates is necessary, I recommend not installing them immediately. As a safe practice, I tend to wait a week or two before updating my devices, especially the iPhone, because initial releases sometimes contain glitches that developers fix after the release.

They say you learn better from mistakes, and that’s exactly what happened to me. I updated my iPhone to iOS 17.5 right after its release. After a few minutes, I noticed the app notifications, especially Instagram, were delayed. Since then, I turned off the Automatic Updates option. Even in the case of iOS 18, I waited around 10 to 12 days before upgrading the software.

Automatic Updates Turned Off
Automatic Updates Turned Off (Image By Tech4Gamers)

Craig Federigh, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Apple, mentioned that for iPhones, the team drops updates “by first making them available for those that explicitly seek them out in Settings, and then 1-4 weeks later (after we’ve received feedback on the update) ramp up to rolling out devices with auto-update enabled.”

A similar formula applies to other tech giants, like Microsoft and Google. Consequently, at least a week before installing a major OS update is a safe practice. On the other hand, do not delay them for long, as it can put your device at security risk and cause other issues. In my case, the battery started to drain faster when I did not update my iOS.

The Next Bloodborne Needs A Dash Of Sekiro

Story Highlight
  • Fans hope From Software’s next game will be more focused and linear, moving away from Elden Ring’s vast open-world design.
  • Continued quality-of-life improvements are expected, ensuring a more player-friendly experience like recent titles.
  • Integrating Sekiro’s parry and posture system into future games could offer a more refined combat experience, building on From Software’s established mechanics.

With Elden Ring being such a smash hit, people are wondering what From Software has in store next, and they’ve been expressing their wants and needs for the next From Software game. We’ve also decided to participate in the fun, so come along as we list what we want from the next From Soft game!

Big Dark Souls

Elden Ring was a mind-blowing experience for long-time Souls fans. In many ways, this game realized the full potential of what From Software had started with Demon Souls. The gradual refining of the Souls formula led the company to make Elden Ring.

Dark Souls 3

Though most fans consider Elden Ring their magnum opus, people are crafting something a bit less open-ended, more tailored, and precise from From’s next outing.

What’s (Probably) Coming

From Software’s releases follow a pattern: one Dark Souls-y game followed by one spin-off. Miyazaki’s big projects are Dark Souls 1, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, Sekiro, and Dark Souls 4 or Elden Ring for casuals.

Dark Souls 1, Dark Souls 3, and Elden Ring are all variations of more or less the same formula crafted in Demon Souls, but the two intermittent games (Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice & Bloodborne)are where they experimented to find what works and what doesn’t.

From Software Games

According to the studio’s track record, the next release from From Software is slated to be another spin-off.

What We Want

The subsequent sections will highlight what we, and most fans alike, are looking for with a new release from From Soft.

Short And Sweet

Elden Ring offered an epic, sprawling open world, but we’ve had our fill. Now, we’re ready for From Software’s next game to be more linear and focused, sticking to the formula they created initially.

Bloodborne On PC
Bloodborne On PC (Image By BrutalSam_ On X)

While Elden Ring‘s vast world was impressive, it had its flaws. After multiple playthroughs, players now crave a more focused experience. Unlike Dark Souls, which consistently builds momentum, Elden Ring often lacked that magic.

We don’t want the next game to be another open-world take; we want a well-crafted, linear adventure that isn’t overwhelming.

Quality Of Life

In the old days with DS1 and Demon Souls, things like quality of life were completely missing from From Software’s games, but that has slowly and gradually changed.

Back then, the run back from the bonfire to the boss used to be regularly harder than the boss itself, but this changed with their later entries, bringing in quality-of-life improvements.

Alexander (Image via Elden Ring Wiki)
Elden Ring UI (Image by GameRant)

These improvements include the UI, a dedicated jump button, fast travel from the start of the game (arguably a less engaging experience, but not a topic for today), fewer and fewer unforeseen deaths, and many more.

From Software now recognizes the importance of the time of the player, and we hope that the next game also shows us these same small improvements in enjoying the game.

Borrow Concepts

Elden Ring reused many elements from previous From Software games, but that’s not a flaw; it’s a bonus. We hope the next game confidently builds on the systems they’ve perfected.

Sekiro
Best First Boss By From Soft (Image By Tech4Gamers)

Demon Souls inspired Dark Souls 1, DS1 inspired Bloodborne, Bloodborne inspired Dark Souls 3, and Dark Souls 3 inspired Elden Ring. You might find something missing in this chain of evolution, none other than the Game Of The Year of 2019, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

One particular thing we would love to see more of is a Sekiro-style combat system, particularly the parry and posture system. It would be amazing if we could get a combat system that feels as melded together as defense and offense did in Sekiro.

Surprises Surprises

Even with all this speculation and wishlisting, we have no idea what the future holds for From Software. Though they have built an amazing reputation, there is no telling what we’ll get next.

Perhaps it’s for the best; From Software often knows what we want better than we do. In 2019, I never imagined wanting a parry-based combat system, but they delivered one of their most polished experiences with an outstanding final boss.

The point is that we’re not sure what exactly Miyazaki’s next venture will be, but all of us are absolutely certain that it will be nothing short of mind-blowing.

Multiplayer In Sniper Elite 5 Is Still So Much Fun

Story Highlights
  • Sniper Elite 5 has incredible mechanics that allow for a realistic sniping experience with bullet drop, distance, and wind direction.
  • You can choose to go about multiple ways on a huge map, and killing your enemy initiates a satisfying kill cam, even in multiplayer mode.
  • The Invasion mode lets you join and eliminate another player trying to finish his objective in campaign mode.

Sniper Elite 5, developed by Rebellion Development, is a perfect sniper simulator released in 2022. Its campaign mode is very impressive on its own, but its multiplayer also shines through even in 2024.

Gameplay & Mechanics

Being a sniper-focused game, this game doesn’t only leave you with a Sniper. Instead, you’re a hitman hired to take out key opponents, and you can do so using all the weapons and tools that you’re equipped with.

Customization

Players can tailor their weapon loadout according to their desired gameplay style. This allows them to be creative with their kills, so no match is the same. The progression system rewards players with new weapons, equipment, and upgrades, keeping the multiplayer fun.

Realistic Sniping Mechanics

With the game’s name being Sniper, this game takes sniping very seriously, and its mechanics are solid evidence of it. It integrates accurate bullet drop, wind direction, and distance into the gunplay, making it very realistic and, at the same time, challenging. Its mechanics have allowed players to make world records for the longest-distance shots.

Cinematic Kill Cam

If you align your shot perfectly, the infamous kill cam gets initiated, which shows our bullet traveling from our gun straight to the opponent’s body part we aimed at. This bullet then brutally thrashes your opponent’s organ or bone, and this feature is still present in multiplayer.

It’s extremely satisfying to have this feature in multiplayer because not only does it look like a Mortal Kombat’s fatality, but it also ensures that you get a confirmed kill, given the long shooting distances.

Detailed & Expansive Maps

One of the best features I love about this game is its huge, explorable maps. A vast land allows for multiple ways of approaching your enemies. This is a treat for both the stealth and aggressive players who can go about any of the approaches they desire.

Sniper Elite 5
Huge Explorable Maps (Image By Tech4Gamers)

Now, you can lay back, wait, and then engage with your enemies from a very long distance with your sniper, or you can sneak behind your enemies for a stealth kill. Conversely, you can also push with your SMG and wreak havoc, which is what most players do in multiplayer.

Variety of Multiplayer Modes

Much like other games, Sniper Elite 5 features many multiplayer games, including the classic Team Deathmatch and the intense Free-for-All. However, it also has a co-operative Overwatch Mode and a challenging Axis Invasion Mode.

Overwatch Mode

In this mode, two players have the same objective of taking out enemy AIs, with one being the Sniper and the other being the Spotter. The Spotter moves around the map, marks enemies, provides intel to the Sniper, and completes various mission objectives.

On the other hand, the sniper focuses on choosing their targets carefully, eliminating enemies from the distance, and managing their ammunition. They also clear the way for the Spotter by taking down enemies that are potentially threatening.

This coop game mode is a joy for both players as it requires back-and-forth communication, and each player depends on the other to complete the mission. This mode is very similar to the coop mode in Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

Axis Invasion Mode

Axis Invasion Mode is one of the highlights of Sniper Elite 5’s multiplayer because it allows you to infiltrate the campaign mode of another player, so you take him out before he completes his single-player objective.

This means that a random player will play his story mode, and you’ll be one of the guards. The AI will stop that player. In this mode, you can tap our fellow AI soldiers, and they’ll inform us if they see the enemy.

Then, you can take down your opponent with a sniper by rushing in with other weapons or while he’s engaging with the AI soldiers. You and your opponent can also place landmines to take them out discretely if any one of you steps on it.

After you’ve killed your opponent, they can request a rematch, allowing for a strategy change for both players. This is very interesting because your enemy must complete the object, and you must take him out before he finishes it.

It also reminds me of sniping in the extremely outstanding Hitman Trilogy, where you focus on eliminating your enemies before they reach a certain point.

Why I Want OG Fortnite Chapter 2 To Return In The Next Update

Story Highlights
  • Fortnite brought back OG Chapter 1, which saw immense success in breaking the peak concurrent players record.
  • People tune in because of the nostalgia the old Chapter evoked. It includes the iconic map and weapons that players enjoy.
  • If not for nostalgia, players want it because they dislike the current updates. They want to experience OG Fortnite and its current mechanics.

It’s been four years since Fortnite added Chapter 2, Season 1. While Epic Games did release the OG Chapter 1 season 1 before, I’m eagerly waiting for its Chapter 2 to be officially released by the next update. Here’s why.

Return Of OG Fortnite Chapter 1

Rampant Success

Fortnite saw rampant success when it reintroduced the OG chapter 1, season 1. The hype already grew after Fortnite announced it was going to bring back the OG chapter.

Fortnite
Fortnite Current Players (Image By Tech4Gamers)

Its success is phenomenal because it broke its all-time high player count record by achieving over 11.6M concurrent players on the day of its release. Not only that, but Fortnite’s Twitch viewership also peaked at 3.2M peak viewers, with 1.9M on average.

This success could be replicated for the next chapter if Fortnite brings it back. This can turn into a chain where Fortnite would release each of its older chapters after a few months to bring back the player base.

Chapter 2’s Charm

Nostalgia

While Call Of Duty is bashed for relying on nostalgia, Fortnite is cherished for it. Admittedly, most players return to play the older chapters solely out of nostalgia. They missed the simpler times when they started playing Fortnite when the concept was new.

Players thoroughly enjoyed the simpler weapons, the innovative buildings, and the creative lore of the game. Now, the lore has already been explored, so they play for the map and the weapons.

Not Liking The Current Updates

The latest Mad Max collaboration, along with the Zues update, has cluttered the map. It looks and feels unnecessarily dense, and the new weapons don’t seem to be as much fun as they used to.

Fortnite: Reload
Player Count (Image By Tech4Gamers)

Due to this dislike of the map, many people have switched to Fortnite Reload instead of the original battle royale mode because it features the Fortnite OG Map and is fast-paced. As you can see, the gap between the concurrent players of both modes is very close.

Newer Battle Pass

Epic Games showcased a newer battle pass for the return of the OG Fortnite Chapter 1, which infused the older skins with a modern touch. This was like a breath of fresh air since all the battle passes after didn’t live up to their level.

Classic Locations

Chapter 2 introduced us to iconic locations such as Misty Meadows, Lazy Lake, and Frenzy Farm. Even though this map doesn’t include Tilted Towers or any of its variations, going to Slurpy Swamp or Sweaty Sand was the go-to option for players.

Fortnite OG
Chapter 2 Season 1 Map

The last zone at Weeping Woods and Steamy Stacks also opened gates for intense and one of the best gameplays. The relocation of Retail Row, Salty Springs, and Pleasant Park also created a familiar yet different experience.

New Mechanics

Fishing was also introduced in Fortnite Chapter 2 and became an iconic part of the game. It would be great if they added additional quests for fishing, as it was essential back in the day.

Fishing (Image By Epic Games)

Back then, the vaulting and parkour mechanics weren’t present, so having more fluid physics while experiencing the old map and weapons would aid the players.

Weapons & Transportation

Speaking of weapons, this chapter also featured most of the weapons that the OG Chapter 1 had. This means you’ll find bolt-action snipers, pump shotguns, and pistols. Some new items, including burst AR, rocket launcher, and epic pistols, have been added back.

Bandage Bazooka and chug jug were added to this chapter, making it one of the chapters that focus much on restoring players’ health. Turrets were also added, and it’d be fun to use them since it’s been a long time since we’ve last used them.

OG Chapter 2
Bandage Bazooka & Boats (Image By Tech4Gamers)

Boats were also added to this chapter, which came in handy because the map’s layout complimented it. Almost every location has a thin river stream that goes through it and connects to another location.

This would be refreshing after the current update, where the map has been turned into a desert, resembling a Rally track.

Fortnite’s Real Plan?

It is reported that Fortnite has planned to return the OG Chapter 2 by the end of this year. It’s only a matter of time to know if this is true or not, but I believe Fortnite’s plan holds value.

I Wish The Nintendo Switch Had Better Ports

Story Highlight
  • The Nintendo Switch is fun and affordable, with many games ported from other platforms.
  • Its weaker hardware causes performance issues, especially with scaled-down ports.
  • Optimizing ports for the Switch would be unrealistic, but it excels with Nintendo’s exclusive games.

The Nintendo Switch is one of the best-selling consoles of all time, and for good reason. It is affordable, fun, different, and has a lot of great games. Of course, not all of these games were made with this console in mind; many were ported from other platforms.

Let’s discuss these other games that have made a home on the Switch and why I wish they were better optimized for their more flamboyant hardware.

The Switch Is Different

Unsurprisingly, the Nintendo Switch’s power is a downgrade compared to every other gaming platform, even handhelds.

Compared to its contemporary consoles, it is very light on the performance front, and compared to today’s consoles, it does not even begin to put up a fight. This is not some huge oversight that Nintendo made, but rather a compromise to make their vision come to life.

Truthfully, the existence of ports for the Nintendo Switch is odd. It is a specialty device with many limitations and strengths. Still, in our world, Nintendo had to try to port all the popular games to their console, games designed for much more robust systems.

How Did We Get Here?

You might be wondering, if the Switch is such a bad performer and all the ports (which are most of the games) run bad on it, how is it such an amazing seller? Well, we must tell you we don’t know for sure.

Nintendo’s Switch has many factors that contributed to its success, but we can’t tell you a single definitive one. It’s made by Nintendo, one of the most beloved game companies ever. It harkens back to the nostalgia of other Nintendo handhelds, like the GameBoy and the DS, and it’s the only place you can play the latest Mario Kart!

What we’re getting at is that it is a fun, easy console to own. The Nintendo Switch was never meant to play sweaty Fortnite, Dark Souls, or The Witcher; that was more of an afterthought, a quite noticeable one.

The Port Situation

Enough about the side stuff; let’s get into the meat of the issue. In this section, we will detail what happened with their ports and what they should’ve done, if they could’ve done anything.

What Happened

It is important to know that Nintendo didn’t make the ports for their games; the developers did that.

Nintendo had sup-par hardware in their console, and developers rushed to get their games on as many platforms as they could, for better or for worse. The result was that the Switch got scaled-down versions of games that barely ran.

The graphical fidelity of these ports was also unsightly. These games were scaled down quite a bit to 720p or lower, giving them a pixelated, shimmery appearance. To be fair, this is the easiest way to get a game running on the Switch, but the results are unsatisfactory.

In addition to the resolution degradation, the games also had a few settings dialed way back too. Even with all of that, the performance of these ports was unremarkable on Nintendo’s handheld.

What Should Have Happened

In an ideal world, the Switch ports should have had dumbed-down models, textures, and a simpler game engine to run on the Nintendo Switch. This method is much more involved, and switching engines is one of the hardest things you could do post-development.

This method is like creating a whole new game for the Nintendo console. It goes without saying that this is completely unrealistic for any game company. The Switch’s hardware limitations are such a handicap for modern games that you need to rework large parts of your games.

The truth is that Nintendo created a different form factor for consoles for the modern world, which the rest of the industry has just started adopting. This different approach has made it one of the best-selling consoles of all time, while still having bad performance.

Final Thoughts

The Nintendo Switch, though creative, lacks a fair bit when it comes to brute force. This makes the process of porting games to it incredibly difficult, especially if you want them to run well.

Still, the console is worth getting for its own games, like the Nintendo suite, and most people should have low expectations for the big AAA games they want to play on it.

14 Years Later, God of War 3 Still Has The Best Boss Fights

Story Highlight
  • God of War 3 brings Kratos’ revenge arc to a climactic end with massive, brutal boss fights against the gods of Olympus.
  • Even after 14 years, its gameplay and epic scale remain unmatched in the character-action genre.
  • The game’s Quick Time Events added a cinematic flair to its battles, setting a high bar that later entries have yet to surpass.

Fans remember that he was a menacing force before Kratos was a calm and reasonable person. The Ghost of Sparta was responsible for wiping out much of the Greek world. Kratos’ revenge arc against the gods of Olympus finally concluded God of War 3.

God of War 3 is my favorite game in the series, especially because of its art style and the conclusion of Kratos’ revenge. Even after 14 years, it has aged so well in terms of gameplay, outdoing most hack-and-slash games of today’s generation.

God of War 3 was the Character-Action genre at its peak, especially because of the large-scale battles and how Kratos finished each God on their own turf. I believe that God of War 3’s boss battles are the best in gaming, even 14 years later.

Why It Matters: It’s remarkable that a 14-year-old game holds so well and even outperforms other games in gameplay and scripted boss battles despite so much technological advancement over the years.

One Of The Best Opening Boss Fights Ever

God of War 3 Poseidon Battle

God of War 2 ended on a cliffhanger after Kratos recruited the Titans to launch a full-scale attack on Olympus. The journey continued with God of War 3, which has one of the most incredible opening gameplay sequences ever.

Fans remember the game’s most iconic boss fight, ironically, is its first one. Kratos’s battle against Poseidon, the God of the Sea, is one of the game’s most bloody battles. Even the scale of the battle is beyond massive for a game that runs on a PS3.

After pulling Poseidon from his enlarged form, Kratos beats the living out of the God of the Sea as he crawls away. I still get chills witnessing that fight, and it’s almost incomprehensible to see how Kratos has changed in these later Norse games.

One Man Army Against Olympus

To think about it, it was just Kratos against the Gods of Olympus and even the Titans later on after getting betrayed by Gaia. Kratos singlehandedly defeated the titans and the gods by himself, picking on each one by one.

Each boss fight was good in its own way. For instance, in the fight with Hercules, Kratos wanted to avoid it since he was his half-brother, but he had to give him the same treatment as the other gods because of his loyalty to Zeus.

The fight against Cronos, the leader of the Titans, was the best in the whole game. This boss fight took it to the next level, fighting against such a huge creature, Kratos, who was just the size of an ant in comparison.

Despite such a huge difference, Kratos still managed to spill Cronos’ guts, stab him in the neck, and stab him once again in the forehead. Considering its scale and grandeur, this is one of the most memorable boss fights in all of God of War games.

The final fight against Zeus was the most satisfying and different from the rest. While the battle ends bloody like any other, the lands were plagued after Zeus’s death. The game ends when Kratos kills himself in an attempt to release hope to the Greek world so they can live on without ever needing the Gods.

Quick Time Events Brought The Best Out Of These Grand Battles

God of War 3

Earlier God of War games stood out with Quick Time Events, which are smooth transitions in large-scale boss battles from one environment to another. Moreover, they take a cinematic approach to make the game feel like you’re not aimlessly throwing your weapons around.

Quick Time Events was a nice change of pace from conventional cutscenes as you had to add your input in these fights, too, offering a more cinematic experience. Everyone knows the iconic “O” pops up at an enemy after downing them and has become a pop culture reference over the years.

While newer God of War games have Quick Time Events, they lack the stability of these battles, where you have to fight against people your size. I was really looking forward to some epic brawls with huge creatures and Gods of the Norse, but newer games failed to deliver on that.

Gamers Praising Titles For Using Ubisoft Formula Outside Of Ubisoft Games Are Hypocrites

Story Highlight
  • The Ubisoft open-world formula, once revolutionary, is now criticized by gamers for making Ubisoft games bland and repetitive.
  • Ironically, players praise games like Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Forbidden West, which follow the same formula.
  • The problem isn’t the formula itself but the fact that Ubisoft’s every-running franchise is an open-world franchise, which causes genre fatigue in general.

The Ubisoft open-world formula was once hailed as revolutionary for adding depth to games aside from the main story content. Games like Far Cry 3 and earlier Assassin’s Creed, which are so famous and good, were the exact result of utilizing the Ubisoft open-world format.

A vast open world with outposts, landscapes, and side activities that would open another area in the map as you progress is what the Ubisoft open-world formula basically is. Over time, gamers have started calling out the French publisher for overusing this format, which had little to no improvement and started getting outdated in recent titles.

However, these same gamers love and appreciate other open-world titles such as Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon games. These games utilize the same Ubisoft open-world formula and are praised by gamers, which is hypocrisy, but the real problem lies beyond that.

Why It Matters: Ubisoft has faced a lot of backlash in recent years for declining game quality, and while that is true, their open-world formula isn’t that outdated and cannot be replaced but improved.

Games That Utilize The Ubisoft Open-World Formula

Ghost of Tsushima
Ghost of Tsushima Is A Ubisoft Game At Core

Just like FromSoftware has inspired a whole new sub-genre of Souls-Like games with Soulsborne titles, Ubisoft indirectly gave us many open-world bangers built on their open-world blueprint.

The first game that comes to my mind is Ghost of Tsushima. I love the game’s art style and the theme of Feudal Japan, but as I’ve discussed before, it is a bit underwhelming.

Aside from the Stand-Off feature, the game is nothing original. It copies the exact same Ubisoft open-world formula: all those outposts, enemies wandering in the open world, map area exploration, and home bases.

Horizon Forbidden is another game based on the Ubisoft open-world blueprint. The game even has a feature where players climb the neck of giant machine dinosaurs to view more of the map, a feature quite similar to synchronization in Assassin’s Creed games.

The game also gets repetitive in terms of side quests, just like Ubisoft games. I can name several more titles, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man or Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain.

However, these games aren’t called out for using Ubisoft’s open-world formula but are, in fact, appreciated for being great open-world games. Many new games are even using Ghost of Tsushima as a reference for their open-world video games, which indirectly means that they’re getting inspiration from Ubisoft games.

Ubisoft’s Open-World Formula Isn’t Really Outdated

Star Wars Outlaws
Star Wars Outlaw Fixed Bloat In Ubisoft Open-World Games

As I mentioned before, I completely agree with the fact that Ubisoft has become a shell of its former self, but people give Ubisoft more negativity than it deserves. They were on a comeback path with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, which was halted by Star Wars: Outlaw, an unfinished game with much potential.

When people say that Ubisoft’s open-world formula has become repetitive and its games are bland, there isn’t an alternative to the formula. The formula itself can work, given the new features being added, but the problem is something else.

Almost every running franchise from Ubisoft in the last decade has been open-world titles, and some of them are based on the same engine. I can’t help but notice the similarities.

Surely, if this were just Assassin’s Creed, things would’ve been a lot different. Assassin’s Creed franchise has done nothing but evolve, regardless of whether you take it in a good or bad way.

However, things will surely change in the future. According to leaks, the next Far Cry game will introduce much innovation and feature a more linear approach since it has a real-time countdown.

Watch Dogs has also been reportedly shelved, taking one more open-world franchise out of the equation. With Splinter Cell remake and more titles in the future, maybe they can prevent fatigue for the formula.
