Naughty Dog Co-Founder Says Studio Made The ‘Right Call’ Selling To Sony

Story Highlight
  • Naughty Dog co-founder Andrew Gavin claims that the studio had to sell to Sony to stay afloat.
  • He sees it as the right call, as AAA game budgets in the 2000s were already in the millions.
  • Early 80s titles needed $50K, while Jak and Daxter by the 2000s exhausted over $15 million during development.

Naughty Dog is one of Sony’s massive first-party studios with a pretty solid track record over the decades. Its reputation has somewhat fallen in the current generation due to radio silence, but the team is trying to turn things around with its newly revealed franchise. However, all this history might never have happened, as the company co-founder attributes everything to the Sony buyout.

Andrew Gavin has explained why Naughty Dog sold to Sony despite doing well enough on its own in the 90s. He clarified that game budgets in the early 2000s had risen over the $10 million range, something the studio couldn’t fund anymore.

Why it matters: Naughty Dog co-founder claimed selling to Sony was the right call, indicating that the publisher and studio executives see the acquisition as a win-win situation over 20 years later.

Naughty Dog co-creator Andrew Gavin explains that selling to Sony was the only way it could keep producing AAA titles.
Andrew Gavin explains that selling to Sony was the only way to survive.

Taking to LinkedIn, Andrew Gavin said that titles in the early 80s only needed $50K to make, while this figure eventually reached over a million with Crash Bandicoot during the 94-96 era. It quickly got out of hand with Jak and Daxter, climbing $15 million.

Selling to Sony wasn’t just about securing a financial future for Naughty Dog. […] Looking back, it was the right call.

Naughty Dog had to be acquired by Sony for funds and resources to keep making innovative entries. He claims this is a systematic issue in the AAA gaming space and has affected many companies in the last two decades.

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet
Naughty Dog recently revealed its new and highly controversial IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

All in all, Naughty Dog—with all its accolades—only exists today because of the Sony buyout. While the exact details are unclear, estimates insinuate that the deal cost Sony between $50 to $200 million back in 2001.

Do you think Naughty Dog would not have survived without being acquired by Sony, or could it have produced smaller IPs to get by instead? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the official Tech4Gamers forum.

GeForce RTX 5070 Leak Shows Disappointing Jump Over Last-Gen

Story Highlight
  • The GeForce RTX 5070 is expected to ship with 12GB of memory and 6,144 Cuda cores.
  • On the other hand, the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti should come with 16GB of memory and 8,960 Cuda cores.
  • Both GPUs are expected to be priced similarly to their predecessors.

Nvidia is expected to debut GeForce RTX 50 series cards next month, but it’s unclear when the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 will be available. However, Zotac has previously stated that the RTX 5070 Ti will be available in the first quarter of next year.

In contrast, the RTX 5070 might be released later. As the wait continues, a reliable leaker has shared specifications for these two graphics cards, painting a grim picture of Nvidia’s mid to higher-mid-range offerings for the Blackwell gaming lineup.

Why it matters: The RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti were criticized for their lackluster price and performance. The latest leak shows that history may repeat itself.

Lead GeForce RTX 50 Series Specs via kopite7kimi

According to kopite7kimi, the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti will come equipped with 16 GB GDDR7 memory on a 256-bit GDDR7 memory bus. It will also use the GB203-300 GPU, which has 8,960 CUDA cores.

Additionally, the card should consume 300W of power and is expected to match the GeForce RTX 4080 in performance, a graphics card ideal for playing games like Stalker 2 at 4K.

For gamers with less money to spare, the GeForce RTX 5070, which is rumored to utilize the GB205-300 GPU, would be a better choice. Do note that the number “300” implies that the chip is not complete.

It is anticipated that the card will have 6,144 CUDA cores and 250W of power consumption. The card will also come with just 12GB of memory, making it very similar to the last generation RTX 4070 Ti.

As for the GeForce RTX 5080, the card is expected to ship with 16GB GDDR7 memory on a 256-bit GDDR7 memory bus. Furthermore, the card will use the GB203-400 GPU and will consume 400W of power, making it a close competitor to the current flagship GeForce RTX 4090.

The RTX 5070 options are anticipated to go on sale after the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090, which should debut in January. That said, we advise you to take all this information with a grain of salt. Do remember that certain information may change eventually, even after launch, depending on the public’s reaction.

Indiana Jones and The Great Circle Has Come Out On Top Against All Odds

According to Gamescom’s latest Twitter post, the community has picked Indiana Jones and The Last Circle as 2024’s Game of The Year. What makes this pick all the more impressive is the fact that the title faced Astro Bot, the same platformer that won Game of The Year at The Game Awards, in the finals.

Bethesda Should Abandon Creation Engine For Unreal Engine 5, Says Former Dev

Story Highlight
  • The former Bethesda art lead, Nate Purkeypile, says the studio should dump the Creation Engine for Unreal Engine 5.
  • He thinks games would hold up better on UE5, as the in-house engine makes development long and complex.
  • The higher-ups at the studio are unlikely to make the shift, as upcoming titles are rumored to use the in-house engine.

Xbox’s Bethesda studio has seen its fair share of ups and downs over the years. The studio’s last AAA release, Starfield, was asserted to shake the entire industry but received widely mixed reception after launch. Many fans argue that Bethesda’s in-house engine—the Creation Engine—is the likely cause behind underwhelming releases and cannot match modern standards.

Now, even an ex-Bethesda lead artist thinks the same, arguing that Xbox should dump the Creation Engine in favor of Unreal Engine 5. It is a move that many popular gaming studios have made in recent years due to convenience.

Why it matters: The words of the former Bethesda artist suggest that the Creation Engine truly reached its peak long ago and cannot handle the modern AAA entries anymore that the studio has come to expect of it.

Speaking in an interview with the YouTube channel KIWI TALKZ, the ex-Bethesda art lead Nate Purkeypile said that games would hold up much better on Unreal Engine 5. However, he doubts that the studio would make such a huge shift despite it happening often lately.

Having made open world games with both engines, to me it’s like absolutely no question that I think things would end up being better [On UE5].

The artist uses Starfield to describe some of the hurdles that the Creation Engine faced. Making rendering and animation systems reach certain standards took a lot of development time, making the overall process incredibly complex.

Starfield
A developer previously admitted that Starfield is flawed, but its sequel will be much better.

All in all, it is best to take the artist’s words with a pinch of salt. Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls 6 is also allegedly using an upgraded version of the Creation Engine. Therefore, a switch-up is unlikely to happen now.

Do you think Bethesda should switch to Unreal Engine 5 despite the performance concerns, or is Creation Engine good enough? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the official Tech4Gamers forum.

Naughty Dog Gets Roasted For Featuring Intergalactic Lead In Its Holiday Tweet

Story Highlight
  • Naughty Dog has been facing backlash ever since the surprise reveal of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
  • Recently, Tati Gabrielle, the game’s main lead, posted a controversial story on her Instagram.
  • The developer recently posted a holiday tweet featuring the Intergalactic’s lead, causing fans to roast it.

Naughty Dog, one of the renowned game developers, is under a lot of heat lately. The fandom criticized it upon releasing a remaster for The Last of Us Part 2. That was a mild controversy, and it was over before it turned into anything big.

However, ever since Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet‘s first trailer was released, the studio has been facing a massive backlash. The fandom is concerned that the developer is now fully indulged in the DEI.

Naughty Dog just recently tweeted to wish fans a happy holiday with concept art featuring the lead of Intergalactic. Due to that, fans have trolled the developer in the comments section

Why it matters: Naughty Dog has developed a legendary legacy in the gaming world, so it is sad to see it getting treated this way by the fandom due to its questionable decisions.

While there are a lot of fans who have appreciated the developer for such sentiment and replied with a sense of humor some have treated it harshly due to the Intergalactic’s lead. It also seems to be hiding such comments which shows the controversy is far from over.

The real comments are in the hidden replies.

-Twitter User

Fans are also pointing out how Tati Gabrielle recently posted a quite controversial story. The story’s context and contents have almost confirmed that the game’s focus is on DEI. Due to that, another massive controversy has started, and now the fans are targeting Tati, too.

This whole controversy is likely to get out of hand, as the game’s dislike ratio has already far surpassed Concord’s record. We have already seen what happens to games with such reception, so it isn’t looking good for Naughty Dog.

Doubling down on this, I see. How’s that going for you?

-Twitter User

The hate is continuously increasing even though not much regarding the title has been revealed. Gamers are the actual audience for games, so developers should always focus on their feedback and what they appreciate.

What do you think about fans hating Naughty Dog, who is known for creating masterpieces? Do you think it is fair to start a massive controversy for one mishap? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below, or join the discussion at the official Tech4Gamers forums.

  • A rumor has suggested that more Indiana Jones games are in development.

While Indiana Jones and The Great Circle had a lot of positive impressions due to previews, its hype remained subpar. The game’s launch on Steam was quite underwhelming, but it was quite popular on the Game Pass

Also, the game seems to have sold quite well in its launch week in the US. It was the second best-selling game, just behind Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

CDPR Admit Witcher 3 Gameplay Was Weak; Aiming For Improvements In Witcher 4

Story Highlight
  • CDPR admits that combat in The Witcher 4 needs to be improved over The Witcher 3.
  • The RPG is currently aiming to portray an intense and emotionally impactful monster-hunting experience.
  • CDPR states that fans can expect the gameplay to portray choreography and intensity similar to the reveal trailer.

CDPR has been quite open about its goals with The Witcher 4 recently. Following an exciting first look, the team has discussed Ciri’s role as the protagonist, the scope of the RPG, and more.

CDPR also confirmed that The Witcher 4 will be quite an ambitious project. In fact, it will address multiple weaknesses present in The Witcher 3, one of which was the core combat, according to CDPR.

Why it matters: The Witcher 3, despite its incredible reputation, was not a flawless RPG. Even when it was released as a brand-new title, die-hard fans admitted that the combat left a lot to be desired.

During a recent interview, The Witcher 4 director Sebastian Kalemba was asked about specific gameplay elements from the last entry that the team considers weak. The director was quick to point out that the gameplay and monster-hunting experience are key areas that need major improvements.

We want to tighten up the gameplay and the experience of monster hunting.

-Sebastian Kalemba

As per the director, The Witcher 4’s reveal trailer was meant to portray a sense of heft and impact to the monster combat. This portrayal also extends to the choreography and emotional charge.

Hunting Monsters Is The Major Part of Ciri’s Journey In The Witcher 4

A major overhaul to combat was already expected for The Witcher 4, but fans will be glad to know that CDPR is well aware of the areas that need the most improvements over past Witcher titles.

The same improvements will likely be iterated upon in future titles since Ciri is set to star as the protagonist in a full trilogy of Witcher games.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Was Among The Top Selling Paid Steam Games In 2024

Story Highlight
  • Baldur’s Gate 3 has landed in the Platinum category of Steam’s bestsellers in 2024.
  • The game made the cut despite releasing last year and not getting a DLC.
  • Other titles in the list include Apex Legends, Destiny 2, Dota 2, Elden Ring, Palworld, and Black Myth: Wukong.

Last year, Baldur’s Gate 3 took the gaming world by storm, breaking records and breathing new life into MMORPGs. The Larian Studios title dominated the Game Awards ceremony in 2023 and received universal acclaim.

And, by the looks of it, the momentum of Baldur’s Gate 3 has not stopped at all this year, with the title ranking among the highest-grossing Steam games of 2024 despite being out for over a year.

Why This Matters: Baldur’s Gate 3 has proved that an RPG can keep a constant stream of players with just regular updates and fresh content.

Baldur's Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 Is Ruling The Steam Year-end Charts

Steam recently released its list of the highest-grossing games this year, and Baldur’s Gate 3 falls at the top of the Platinum category, which is the highest one. The Larian Studios title impressively did this without any new DLCs, while Elden Ring‘s Shadow of the Erdtree is a big reason it’s placed in the top tier.

Larian Studios has kept the RPG fresh with constant updates and additions to the already massive title. Hence, players always have a new scenario to go back to.

Considering how players on the Steam Deck have spent 17 million hours playing Baldur’s Gate 3, this ranking is not that much of a surprise. The Larian RPG has constantly hit up to 100k users over a year after launch, which is unbelievable for a non-live-service title.

Other titles in the Premium category are live-service juggernauts like Apex Legends, Dota, and Counter-Strike, Palworld, Black Myth: Wukong, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 also made the cut after releasing in 2024.

Most impressively, Destiny 2 and PUBG are in the Platinum category, too, years after their original release at the back end of last decade. However, Larian and Baldur’s Gate 3 are definitely the biggest winners on this list.

Do you think the RPG Will continue this momentum next year? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.

Silent Hill 2 Remake Director Pitched Lord of the Rings-Inspired Horror RPG Concept

Story Highlight
  • Silent Hill 2 art director reveals he suggested a horror RPG set in the Lord of the Rings universe.
  • He said his ideal project would be a horror fantasy game set in medieval times.
  • The whole discussion suggests that the pitch wasn’t met with too much enthusiasm.

Silent Hill 2 Remake was undoubtedly one of the finest games of this year. Despite missing out on any major award at TGA 2024, it won the audience with an incarnation of the classic game.

Now, the Silent Hill 2 Art Director has revealed that he even pitched a Lord of the Rings-inspired horror RPG, which could be a great success if made a reality.

Why it matters: Based on how well The Bloober Team did with Silent Hill 2 Remake, fans would be open to anything they release with horror elements, even a game set in the LOTR universe.

Talking to Bonfire Conversations, director Mateusz Lenart discussed the team’s approach and challenges while creating the spooky world of Silent Hill 2 Remake. He further stated that his dream project would be a fantasy horror RPG.

The host suggested that Lord of the Rings would be really ‘Cool’ for the idea, to which Lenart agreed and stated that he pitched the idea. However, it doesn’t seem like the idea went anywhere.

Don’t think I didn’t pitch my ideas for one.

– Lenart on LOTR Horror RPG Pitch

The Lord of The Rings: Gollum
The recent LOTR: Gollum game was a huge disappointment

While on paper, this idea doesn’t seem too good, it would make a lot of sense considering that there are horror elements in the franchise, especially with the Fellowship of the Ring. However, whether the pitch will ever translate into an actual game is yet to be seen.

Lord of The Rings fans haven’t had many great games to work with, either. Last year’s Gollum game, especially, was a huge disappointment. Meanwhile, Bloober Team recently revealed stunning art from its next game, Cronos: The New Dawn.

What are your thoughts on a Lord of the Rings-inspired horror game? Do you think it would’ve worked? Let us know in the comments or join the discussion at the official Tech4Gamers Forum.
