Important Mouse Key Terms
Here are some useful mouse key terms that you should be familiar with if you want to shop for a mouse.
- DPI: Dots per Inch, or DPI, is a measure of the overall sensitivity of the mouse and is often configurable.
- CPI: Counts Per Inch (CPI), which is also referred to as CPI, serves as an alternative terminology to describe DPI.
- PTFE: PTFE is a specialized material employed in the feet of modern mice, offering advantages such as decreased friction resistance and improved gliding capabilities. These properties make it an optimal selection for mouse feet.
- IPS:ย IPS, short for Inches Per Second, is a metric employed to gauge the highest achievable tracking speed of your mouse.
- Maximum Acceleration:ย Mouse acceleration pertains to a mouse’s maximum linear acceleration capability and is typically quantified in terms of Gravitational Force (G).
- Polling Rate:ย The polling rate of a mouse, measured in Hz, signifies the frequency at which your computer receives updates on the mouse’s actions. A higher polling rate leads to reduced delay.
- Click Latency:ย Click latency is the term used to describe the delay between pressing a button on your mouse and the computer recognizing the input. A higher click latency can result in a subpar gaming experience due to the increased delay between the mouse and the system.
- Programmable Buttons:ย Newer mice come with multiple buttons that offer the flexibility to be reprogrammed for various functions. Typically, this reprogramming is carried out using the accompanying software provided with the mouse.
- Lift-Off Distance:ย The lift-off distance refers to the highest point at which you can raise your mouse before the sensor stops tracking its movement. A smaller lift-off distance is essential for achieving precise tracking.
