After PS5 Pro Got Sold Out Everywhere, Resellers Are Asking Over $1,400

Even Amazon Prices Have Been Skewed Above The $900 Retail Price.

Story Highlight
  • Resellers on eBay are asking for more than $1,400 for a packed PS5 Pro.
  • Following the GTA 6 extended reveal, the console has sold out everywhere, including the official PS5 Store.
  • Some listings on eBay are even trying to fetch $2,200 for a new PS5 Pro.

Arguably, no third-party company is benefiting more from the launch of GTA 6 than Sony. The Japanese giant’s exclusive marketing deal with Rockstar has put PlayStation 5 front and center, with the recent extended showcase that premiered on Netflix also being captured on the console.

The hype for GTA 6 has reached such a point that PS5 Pro, which will arguably be the best way to play the game at launch, has sold out at every retailer in the United States. As it turns out, scalpers are taking full advantage of the situation, as always, and selling the hardware for exorbitant prices.

Why it matters: In anticipation of the biggest game launch of this generation, Sony should have prepared a larger batch of its best-performing current-gen hardware.

The PS5 Pro has sold out at most retailers, including the official PlayStation Store, leading resellers to ask exorbitant prices for the console. On eBay, almost all listings for the PS5 Pro range between $1,200 and $1,500, which is much higher than the $900 retail price of the Sony hardware.

A few listings on the website even go above $2,000 for a new and sealed PS5 Pro, with one reseller asking for $2,250. Demand for the console has also started affecting pricing on Amazon, with a new PS5 Pro going for as high as $1,400, while used models are retailing for a little cheaper at $1,150.

Considering how 77% of GTA 6 pre-orders have come from PS5 players, the increase in demand after the extended reveal makes complete sense. However, with sales on the console shooting up by a whopping 606% this last week, the PS5 Pro is going to get more expensive and scarce as the game edges closer to launch.

The console has even sold out on the official PlayStation Store.

Rockstar and Sony have also confirmed that GTA 6 will have PS5 Pro enhancements; hence, grabbing the console should be a priority for anyone who wants the best version of the open-world title.

Do you think buying a PS5 Pro is the best way to experience GTA 6? Should Sony have prepared more stock in anticipation of the game? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
