Ever since PlayStation became the enemy No.1 by announcing the end of physical discs, game ownership in the industry has been hotly debated. Sony has obliterated any goodwill with consumers by claiming that players don’t really own any of their digital titles and only have a license.
On the other hand, Xbox has been trying to capitalise on the shifting industry trends by launching its own solution, the disc-to-digital conversion program. The program has now launched for Xbox Insiders, and one of its features suggests it could be a game-changer for the industry.
Why it matters: A conversion program that provides consumers with such a benefit could turn out to be a big PR victory for Team Green if it plays its cards right.
According to users on X who have been granted access to the program, the Xbox disc-to-digital conversion system can be used to access delisted games. Players have been able to play multiple titles that are not present on the Xbox Store, including the Deadpool game from Activision.
Rock Band 4, a 2015 rhythm title from Harmonix which got delisted, was also playable after users inserted its physical disc and received a license thanks to the new Xbox program. However, not all delisted titles can be resurrected through this new venture, as one user couldn’t gain a license to Amazing Spider-Man 2.
With Sony extensively pushing digital media amid the crumbling state of physical disc supply chains, this alternative option from Xbox could give them an edge over PlayStation next generation. Fans have already praised this decision by Asha Sharma, hailing Xbox for such a consumer-friendly initiative.
With the CEO also hinting that Xbox Helix will ship with a disc drive to give consumers more choice, PlayStation could lose favor with the wider gaming community for its anti-consumer stance.
