- Sony is using new PS5 advertisements to push players toward digital consoles and downloads.
- Previous ads from the gaming giant used to showcase the PS5 Disc Edition console, but this is no longer the case.
- The campaign reflects PlayStation’s plans to gradually phase out disc games and hardware in the coming years.
PlayStation has plans to permanently move on from discs. As part of these plans, the gaming giant is now adding disclaimers to PS5 Disc Edition packaging and the PlayStation Direct Store.
Further pushing for a digital-only future by 2028, PlayStation has even replaced PS5 Disc Edition consoles in its video advertisements.
Why it matters: The gaming giant will no longer manufacture discs from 2028 onwards, bringing the end of physical games after over 30 years.
PlayStation’s latest “It Happens on PS5” advertisement now shows a digital-only PS5 console at the end of the trailer. This is part of Sony’s evolving strategy to push consumers toward digital purchases.
Interestingly, a similar “It Happens on PS5” ad from only a few months ago highlighted the PS5 Disc Edition at the end of the trailer. This shift effectively showcases a change in Sony’s priorities and plans.
Of course, the gaming giant is being very meticulous about easing its audience into the all-digital future. Most of PlayStation’s games are already sold digitally, so these advertisements may prove effective in convincing the small number of players still buying physical discs.

At this rate, fans can expect to see PlayStation making similarly small changes to its marketing as it continues to reflect the shift in priority from physical to digital games. Moreover, the PS6 is expected to be an all-digital console from the very beginning.
