- A recent 40-minute demo of Tides of Annihilation sparked backlash because the main character, Gwendolyn, has a new face design that fans dislike.
- Players prefer the original sharper facial structure, which had already become the game’s recognizable look.
- Eclipse Glow Games has not explained the change or confirmed if it is linked to the recast.
Tides of Annihilation has shown off a new 40-minute gameplay demo, but one unexpected change is getting more attention than the game’s flashy combat. Fans have noticed that protagonist Gwendolyn appears to have a noticeably different face compared with her earlier appearances, and some players are not pleased with the redesign.
Why it matters: The demo was meant to showcase the game’s combat. Instead, Gwendolyn’s updated appearance became a talking point among fans.

On the game’s Steam Community page, one recent discussion is simply titled “face model.” The player argues that the previous version of Gwendolyn’s face was “better by miles” and questions why the developers decided to change it. Another thread describes the new version as a “beauty nerf” and says the character no longer looks like she did in earlier footage.
The strongest reaction appears to come from players who had already become attached to Gwendolyn’s original look. Her face has been one of the most recognizable parts of Tides of Annihilation since the game was first shown. Earlier trailers presented her with a sharper, more realistic facial structure that helped the character stand out.
Interestingly, the face change comes shortly after another major change involving Gwendolyn. Jennifer English, who originally voiced the protagonist, stepped away from the role in June for personal health reasons.
Eclipse Glow Games said English would remain involved as an advisor and would help the team find a replacement. The new voice actor is recording lines for the Gamescom 2026 demo.
There is currently no indication from Eclipse Glow Games that the facial redesign is connected to the voice actor change. The studio has not publicly explained why Gwendolyn’s face was altered in the latest build, which might be why there is so much discussion.
For now, the new face appears to be part of the game’s latest build rather than a confirmed final design. It’ll be interesting to see how Gwendolyn’s appearance changes throughout future trailers and teasers. Tides of Annihilation is expected to release in fall 2026 or early 2027.
