Usually, when we talk about somebody’s order being messed up, it’s the buyer getting the short end of the stick. However, that isn’t always the case, and sometimes the buyer gets way more than he initially asked for. We have covered a few of these “reverse scams” before, and the latest one sees a Redditor who got a Ryzen CPU when he simply wanted a CPU cooler.
Reddit user Joccahontas posted in the r/pcmasterrace subreddit that he apparently ordered the “cheapest CPU fan” but instead received an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU. He went on to clarify in the replies that he had ordered a Cooler Master Hyper 212, so he was basically after a CPU cooler and got handed a new CPU in its place.

Apparently, the OP is not American but Norwegian, and he bought it from a Norwegian store and not something like Amazon. The cooler was destined for an Intel Core i7-9700F, which unfortunately stays cooler-less as of the writing of this article. The Redditor says he donated the Ryzen 7 5800X3D to a friend, as he already has a Ryzen 7 7800X3D himself.
This find is also in line with a new trend we have been seeing over the past few weeks. We recently saw another Redditor who scored a $600 Kingston DDR5 RAM kit for just $14 at a thrift store, while another one found a working GTX 1050 Ti for just $2. Seems like rare hardware finds are the theme of the summer, but this latest one is probably just an order that got mixed up. Someone somewhere most likely got a Hyper 212 when they ordered a Ryzen 7 5800X3D.
It is also important to note that the CPU is from AMD’s 10th Anniversary batch of Ryzen 7 5800X3D processors, so it is definitely a new unit and not something that was sitting on the shelves from years ago. The Redditor has not confirmed whether or not it works, but it would be fair to assume that it does since it is still in its brand-new packaging.
The 5800X3D currently goes for $349, and the Cooler Master Hyper 212 can be found for just over $20 at most retailers depending on the variant. That’s a sizeable profit for our Reddit user, but it is key to remember that someone else probably got the short end of the stick from this deal too. In the end, the customer isn’t at fault, but rather the retailer and/or shipping company that managed to mix up the orders.
Funnily enough, the guy is still looking for his CPU cooler, as the Ryzen 7 5800X3D does not ship with one in the box.
There are also those who think that the Redditor should have returned the CPU instead and gone through the proper channels to rectify this mistake. Nevertheless, that is up to the customer, but it is an interesting thought exercise.
