Redditor Scores a $600 DDR5 Kingston Fury RAM Kit For Just $14 at a Thrift Store

That’s the equivalent of striking gold nowadays!

Story Highlight

  • A Redditor managed to grab a 32GB DDR5 Kingston Fury RAM kit for just €12.50 at a local thrift store.
  • DDR5 RAM prices are through the roof due to the ongoing global memory shortage, so this is a steal.
  • Equivalent DDR5-6000 32GB kits are going anywhere from $400 to $600 on the market nowadays.

In a time where memory prices just keep going up, finding a deal is becoming increasingly rare. However, what this Redditor found can’t simply be labeled as a “deal.”

Reddit user JuniTheFox posted in the r/pcmasterrace subreddit about a Kingston Fury Beast RAM kit that they just managed to get their hands on. While that in itself is not the deal, commenters were left wide-eyed when they glanced at the sticker price of the RAM. The poster had somehow managed to snag this 32GB DDR5 RAM kit for just  €12.50 at their local thrift store. That’s not €125, just €12.50, which is about $14 in freedom units.

Even if it was 10 times the price, it still would have been an amazing deal. The average running price of DDR5 kits has skyrocketed over the past year, with industry sources saying that the DRAM shortage will likely continue to persist for another couple of years, at least. In this crunch, finding a 32GB DDR5 memory kit under €400 can be considered a good buy, but our friend the Redditor just paid a fraction of that.

More details can be seen once you zoom in on the packaging. It’s a DDR5-6000 kit at CL36, which is a fairly decent spec but not anything too crazy. However, at this price, even a DDR3 kit would be difficult to find, especially since the RAMpocalypse has affected older memory as well. On Amazon, similar DDR5-6000 32GB kits are listed around $440 – $600, so it’s easy to understand why so many of the commenters were jealous of the poster.

Judging by the caption, even he was surprised at how great a deal he managed to get. We have seen similar deals being snagged at local stores recently, such as the guy who managed to score a GTX 1050 Ti for just $2 at Goodwill recently. Our lucky friend also managed to get his Kingston RAM at a thrift store in the Netherlands, so it might be time to go thrifting for computer parts now.

The kit is open-boxed, and in the post, the Redditor did not reveal whether the kit was in perfect working order. Regardless, paying just 2.5% of the retail price is still a huge bargain, and even if the memory doesn’t work, it would probably still be worth the price as dummy sticks.

While this is not something we can hope to replicate, it is a neat little reminder of the kinds of deals you can sometimes get at local thrift stores and bargain outlets. It may not be a good idea to go shopping for your next PC there, but it might be a good routine to just pop in every once in a while to see what’s on the shelves.
