Another case of the X3D processor burning has appeared on Reddit, but this time, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D was just 3 months old. The processor, running on its default settings, bulged and burnt, taking the motherboard socket along with it.
Why it matters: The X3D processors, despite being powerful, have a notorious history of burning out due to a voltage issue that was thought to have been resolved.

In the r/PCMR community, a user shared his friend’s experience with a Ryzen 7 78000X3D that, upon swelling, had its metal plate come loose, exposing the CPU.
The user was running an MSI PRO X870-P WIFI with 16GB of DDR5 memory on its XMP profile, but other than that, all profiles were default. The X870 boards have a history of outputting higher voltages that burnt these CPUs, but this was back in 2023 and was resolved by subsequent BIOS updates that were carried over to the newer X870 boards released in 2024.
This is why it’s hard to pinpoint the current case. The user was running an MSI A750GL PCIE5, which is a decent mid-range PSU, so we can rule that possibility out. Either this is a motherboard issue or a rare instance of a “terrible draw in the silicon lottery“, as the Redditor themselves put it.
Nevertheless, the Redditor has been advised to file an RMA; however, a replacement seems unlikely now, especially since the CPU has been delid, which voids the warranty. However, if the CPU swelling caused it to delid itself rather than the user, they have a better chance of a replacement.
