A Prototype Based On A Halo Pitch Was Already Built And Cancelled By Activision.

Story Highlight
  • Sledgehammer Games could develop a new Halo multiplayer title, according to Rebs Gaming.
  • Microsoft is exploring a proposition which would see Activision help Halo Studios in development.
  • A prototype for a new Halo pitch was already built and cancelled, meaning that work is under way.

It’s safe to say that Halo Campaign Evolved hasn’t turned out to be a big hit like Microsoft expected. The title has sold 1.2 million copies so far, managing to capture just 1% of PlayStation’s player base following the divisive move to the rival platform.

The remake has also performed horribly on the critical front, becoming the lowest-rated mainline entry in the series, with its user score dropping as low as 5.2 on Metacritic. As it turns out, Microsoft is now seeking external help from a Call of Duty developer to fix the mess that Halo has become.

Why it matters: Considering all of the internal issues plaguing Halo Studios, getting help from Activision in development might not be the worst-case scenario for the franchise.

As revealed by Rebs Gaming in a new video, Microsoft is exploring a collaboration between Activision and Halo Studios, which will see Call of Duty developer Sledgehammer Games develop a new multiplayer title in the franchise. The insider heard from a credible source that Activision will now lend a hand in Halo’s development, and a prototype has already been built.

Microsoft is exploring a proposition to have Activision help develop Halo Games, which includes having Sledgehammer Games develop a Halo multiplayer game.

The Call of Duty maker tested a prototype based on a new Halo pitch this June. This prototype only included basic game mechanics like movement, and according to Rebs, it was cancelled in July. However, this doesn’t mean Activision isn’t going to develop new Halo games, as Microsoft is still considering this collaboration.

Nothing has been greenlit as of yet, but with outsourcing becoming the norm for Halo, Activision and Sledgehammer could very well work on the multiplayer project, according to the insider.

Halo Campaign Evolved
Halo Campaign Evolved has been underwhelming both critically and commercially.

Considering how current-gen ports for the first two Call of Duty: Black Ops titles just outsold Campaign Evolved by 32x, getting help from the biggest shooting franchise in the world could be what saves Halo.
