- Naughty Dog and Uncharted designer Benson Russel thinks the original trilogy doesn’t need the remake treatment.
- The first three Uncharted games are still playable on modern consoles; hence, remakes are senseless.
- Russel thinks the studio should instead develop a new game set in Nathan Drake’s past.
Arguably, the biggest absence in the PlayStation ecosystem this generation has been Naughty Dog. Besides releasing a couple of remakes, the developer has been unable to leave its mark on PS5 players, failing to release a brand-new title in the last 6 years.
The drought is so bad at Naughty Dog that even Sony has expressed its dissatisfaction with the studio, with the upcoming Intergalactic skipping a 2026 launch despite a $600 million budget. Now, a former designer has advised the studio regarding one of its biggest IPs: Uncharted.
Why it matters: Uncharted is one of the most popular franchises under Sony’s care, and putting it on the sidelines for almost a decade is bad strategy from the gaming giant.

In a new interview with FRVR, Benson Russel, the designer of the first three Uncharted titles, advised Naughty Dog to make a brand-new game in the series instead of remaking the originals. The former Naughty Dog employee stated that a remake of the Uncharted trilogy doesn’t make sense, as it’s available to play on modern consoles.
Take the lessons of Uncharted 4 and make a new game that’s in the past or wherever you need it to be.
Russel also stated that the older titles will need rewrites to resemble the slow and emotional nature of modern Naughty Dog titles. Key set pieces and scenes might need to be removed to make the remakes work. Hence, the designer thinks that there is no point in giving Uncharted the remake treatment as it will destroy the spirit of the originals.
Benson Russel instead nudged the studio to make a new Uncharted game and set it in Nathan Drake’s past, just like certain portions of Uncharted 4.

Rumors have indicated in the past few months that a new Uncharted title is in development, with multiple sources confirming that Naughty Dog is back working on the IP. With the franchise’s director also teasing something related to the games, we can only hope Nathan Drake returns in a new project sooner rather than later.
