Bad Sign For Witcher Spin-off?

Story Highlight
  • CD Projekt Red has confirmed layoffs tied to The Witcher multiplayer spin-off, Project Sirius.
  • The cuts affect 18 developers connected to the title, with 9 laid off and the rest offered work on other projects.
  • The layoffs add more uncertainty around Sirius after CDPR previously reworked the game’s direction.

CDPR has been working on a brand new multiplayer spin-off based on The Witcher, dubbed Project Sirius. However, the game has struggled to find a definitive direction over the years, resulting in layoffs and resets.

Although the team remains hopeful about the game, it has once again laid off developers involved in the development of Project Sirius.

Why it matters: CDPR has yet to try its hand at multiplayer on a big scale, so the team may be struggling to find its footing with The Witcher’s multiplayer spin-off.

As per reports, the team working on the game has lost around 18 developers recently. Among them, 9 have been laid off, while 9 have been given the choice to join a different CD Projekt RED project.

These cuts affect both the Boston and Warsaw CDPR teams, but CDPR states that the layoffs are part of a readjustment strategy. According to a statement, these cuts were made to account for the game’s needs at its current stage.

Note that Project Sirius previously had over 80 developers working on it. The latest cuts suggest this number has shrunk closer to 65 now.

Elsewhere, CD Projekt RED has 2 other big games in the works based on The Witcher series. These include a remake of the first game, and of course, the much-anticipated The Witcher 4.

What do you think CD Projekt RED should do with The Witcher multiplayer spin-off from here?
