Story Highlight
  • Rockstar Games has confirmed that its next games won’t take over 8 years to develop like GTA 6.
  • The studio has developed multiple tools to streamline development for its future endeavors.
  • The company believes that it can develop compelling content more quickly moving forward.

GTA 6 is shaping up to be the most ambitious game, so the anticipation among Rockstar developers and gamers is at an all-time high. At the same time, everyone realizes the studio’s chef-d’œuvre suffered from an incredibly long development time of eight years.

The game went through multiple delays and a dark period due to an undefined vision and a lack of manpower. However, Rockstar leadership has now vowed that their next game won’t take another decade to come out, regardless of ambitions.

Why it matters: Rockstar Games recognizes that GTA 6 took way too long to develop. The studio is ready to face an increasingly demanding future with its new tools, which are better equipped to keep up with the team’s growing ambitions for the next titles.

In an interview with Bloomberg, GTA 6 lead developer Phil Hooker confirms that Rockstar aims to use the game as a foundation to build new games at a much faster pace.

Rockstar has whipped up various development tools and upgraded its proprietary engine to better keep up with its grand ambitions in the future. Meanwhile, the hired staff over the years is also well equipped to keep up with highly ambitious goals.

In other words, the company has no plans to reel back its standards to launch projects sooner moving forward. In fact, Phil argues that the new tools will allow the studio to create compelling content at the expected quality while also cutting back on time.

We foundationally changed a lot of stuff on this project. But now it’s done, and we’re not going to rip it apart.

We may see GTA 6-level projects from Rockstar at a much shorter developmental window moving forward.

Therefore, steady changes in the studio’s foundation might allow it to launch its next AAA offering in just a few years of development.
