- Ken Kutaragi has said long-term support for physical discs is not economically reasonable.
- The former PlayStation boss acknowledged that discs have become symbolic of game ownership even if they shouldn’t be.
- He also believes that consoles could completely disappear at some point in the future.
PlayStation has faced a ton of backlash for its decision to abandon physical games. Many important people in the industry have also had mixed reactions to this announcement, including important PlayStation personalities like Shuhei Yoshida and Shawn Layden.
Now, perhaps the most important person in PlayStation history, has discussed the end of Sony’s disc production. He says that the fan backlash isn’t unwarranted, but Sony’s decision also makes sense.
Why it matters: PlayStation’s step away from discs will perhaps be the biggest change the industry has seen in the last few decades.

Ken Kutaragi, widely known as the Father of PlayStation, has weighed in on the debate around physical games, saying that supporting discs indefinitely does not make economic sense for the industry.
Speaking to VGC, Kutaragi described some of the backlash to removing discs as a “mentality issue.” He argued that people don’t mind digital content for a device like a smartphone, so the same not being a case with games may be a mentality issue.
The PlayStation creator also admitted that player backlash isn’t unwarranted. However, he believes Sony has wider all-digital goals. Ken Kutaragi even suggested that consoles may eventually be phased out altogether.
I understand (why some people are upset), but I don’t think its economically reasonable.

Ken Kutaragi’s insight on the situation is interesting since he helped shape PlayStation into the gaming leader it has become today. It will, therefore, be interesting to see how Sony moves forward with its approach to physical and digital games.
