- The CyberConnect 2 CEO says an all-digital PlayStation future could be better for developers and players.
- The developer pointed to convenience and huge modern games, including GTA 6, as reasons discs are losing relevance.
- He also notes that developers will benefit from the lack of discs due to greater profitability.
PlayStation’s all-digital push has led to mixed reactions from prominent figures across the industry.
While there are those who disagree with the gaming giant’s approach, some feel the decision is ultimately good for the games industry. In fact, the CyberConnect 2 CEO has recently spoken out in favor of PlayStation’s decision.
Why it matters: PlayStation has seen a decent amount of backlash over its shift to digital games, but it seems not everyone agrees with this backlash.

Hiroshi Matsuyama, the CEO of CyberConnect 2, a team best known for its work on the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series, recently discussed the transition to an all-digital future by PlayStation, arguing that it will be nothing but positive.
For starters, he believes that profitability for developers will rise thanks to the lack of discs. Matsuyama also argues that digital gaming is simply unbeatable due to its convenience.
Elsewhere, he notes that big releases like GTA 6 are just too hard to fit on a disc. As translated by Automaton, the CyberConnect 2 CEO argues that this is true of most games, so shifting to digital completely solves this issue.
According to the developer, having to purchase discs from PlayStation or Nintendo adds an additional layer of expense to the whole process of shipping a game. This is why he completely supports the move to digital gaming from Sony.
It’s important to make that shift. There will be nothing but positive things.

Of course, it will be interesting to see whether developers actually benefit from the all-digital shift like Hiroshi Matsuyama predicts.
