Ex-PlayStation Boss Thinks Losing Physical Games Won't Matter Too Much In The Long Run!

Story Highlight

  • Shuhei Yoshida has weighed in on the debate over PlayStation moving further away from physical discs.
  • The former PlayStation boss said the issue isn’t too big since physical discs still require downloads due to patches and updates.
  • Shuhei Yoshida himself has fully embraced the digital ecosystem, stating that he doesn’t enjoy the hassle that comes with discs.

Ever since its announcement of ending physical discs, PlayStation has been taking steps to move further toward digital gaming. However, the gaming giant has done so at the cost of upsetting many fans.

Various industry veterans have also spoken out against this decision, but one former PlayStation head doesn’t mind this change.

Why it matters: Shuhei Yoshida’s opinions typically align with the masses. In the past, the developer has been a huge advocate for indie games and other initiatives that fans have come to appreciate.

Shuhei Yoshida Doesn’t Agree With The Masses Here

Former PlayStation executive and Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Shuhei Yoshida does not appear convinced that the possible end of physical discs would be as disruptive as some fans fear.

In a new interview, he argues that modern console games already rely heavily on online downloads. This is due to the need for patches and additional content, all of which require frequent downloads, even for disc-based games.

The former PlayStation boss also admitted that he prefers digital games over physical ones. He claims not to be too fond of having to swap or manage discs.

Personally, I’m a totally digital consumer. Anyone who chooses to purchase a physical disc will still need to download new patches, DLCs, or updates. Not having discs, I don’t understand if it’s such a big issue.

With conditions like these, physical media preservation is more important than ever.

Still, Shuhei Yoshida, like many others, believes that it would be unfortunate to lose physical games altogether.

It would be a shame if physical games were no longer available to collect.

What do you think about the former PlayStation boss’ stance on the matter? Let’s discuss in the comments.
