- Activision believes recent Black Ops ports showed strong demand for classic Call of Duty.
- The publisher is now applying that lesson to Modern Warfare 4.
- This suggests nostalgia is becoming a major part of Call of Duty’s current strategy.
The recently released Black Ops ports have been major successes for Activision, selling millions of units. Black Ops 2, in particular, ended up outperforming plenty of games in the US despite launching without much marketing and suffering from hacking issues.
According to Activision, these ports show a clear demand for classic Call of Duty.
Why it matters: The Black Ops ports have been extremely well received due to just how great the games are at their core.

Activision has taken a clear lesson from the recent Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 ports on PlayStation. As per Chief Marketing Officer Tyler Bahl, Activision was surprised by how well the games ended up performing.
This demand helped show the publisher that there is still room for the “good old days” approach as Modern Warfare 4 moves in that direction. The studio is now using learning from the Black Ops ports and applying it to future titles.
We thought they would do well; we didn’t think they would do that well. You can see that demand of being able to get back to the good old days of playing with your friends and having fun.

Following the success of these ports, it will be interesting to see how far Activision goes to cater to older fans with Modern Warfare 4. The publisher certainly seems to be focusing on older fans again, so Modern Warfare 4 will be worth keeping an eye on.
