  • Insomniac Games’ communications director has called out the negativity around Marvel’s Wolverine.
  • James Stevenson said that the hate posts feel like an onslaught on the mental health of developers.
  • The communications director has even considered asking employees to avoid social media.

Years after its reveal at the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, Marvel’s Wolverine is finally set to hit the stores this September. With 60 FPS gameplay and a combat system filled with gore, the highly anticipated title will be Insomniac’s first new game since Spider-Man 2.

However, Marvel’s Wolverine has been the target of online hate ever since Sony started showcasing more gameplay. The upcoming superhero title has been compared to PS2 games and is being criticised for bringing nothing revolutionary to the table. As it turns out, the online hate campaign has gotten so bad that even Insomniac developers are now troubled.

Why it matters: The hate campaign around Marvel’s Wolverine feels unfair to Insomniac, but it might be a consequence of the negativity fans are harboring for Sony thanks to its decision to cancel physical discs.

James Stevenson, the director of Communications at Insomniac Games, stated on X that he is considering telling developers to avoid the platform due to the intense criticism surrounding Marvel’s Wolverine.

The communications manager emphasized that the relentless onslaught of hate Insomniac and Marvel’s Wolverine are receiving isn’t good for the mental health of developers. Stevenson also blamed the algorithm for amplifying negative posts regarding the upcoming action-adventure title.

Despite anticipation surrounding Marvel’s Wolverine, the game has been subject to negativity and crude humor on X. Fans have been comparing a Sentinel fight in the game to a boss battle in a Ben 10 title that released on PS2. Similarly, other hate posts have targeted the conventional and unchanging nature of the gameplay compared to other Insomniac titles.

Considering how previews have stated that Marvel’s Wolverine doesn’t bring anything revolutionary to Sony’s first-party formula, these posts might be a cruel prophecy. However, early reviews have also emphasized that the Insomniac game is shipping with a solid combat and gameplay system. Hence, reserving judgment until release might be a good idea.

Do you think Marvel’s Wolverine will turn out to be a success despite the hate train surrounding it? Are you going to buy the title despite the gameplay not showcasing any new fresh mechanics? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
