We are in the era of the gaming industry, where it gradually transitioning towards an all-digital future. PlayStation announced it’s getting rid of discs in 2028, and Xbox’s new feature further solidifies that the company might do the same.
However, a journalist says that the transition is less about discs and more about the entire disc drive supply chain falling. Companies are realizing that digital is the future and are pivoting away from manufacturing the drives.
Why it matters: Since PlayStation is unarguably the biggest home console, it seems logical that companies wouldn’t want to risk production since the next iteration will ship without a drive, and Xbox kind of gets in the way.
Jez Corden claims that his sources told him that the supply chain for components used to make disc drives is collapsing. The all-digital future is apparent and quickly approaching, and Xbox might not be able to avoid it either.
Amid all this, the disc-to-digital feature is a really smart move by Xbox. You can use your discs as an official license to the game and have complete ownership, which is the biggest problem with all-digital titles.
Since it isn’t a revocable license like traditional digital games, it provides a more sense of security. Additionally, you can share the license, and it also utilizes Xbox Play Anywhere, so it’s a rather neat feature.
