- An analyst suggests Sony could ship the standard PS6 at a lower price than expected, thanks to the end of support for physical discs.
- He notes that a $1000 console would significantly limit PlayStation’s future audience.
- The analyst also believes that the end of support happening in 2028 is a generational timing for the PS6.
PlayStation is moving forward with plans for an all-digital PlayStation future. At the same time, the gaming giant is hard at work on the PS6 ahead of its official release.
Although the company says a release date has yet to be decided, rumor has it that the PS6 will cost an arm and a leg. However, an analyst suggests the all-digital PS6 push could somewhat help bring down costs.
Why it matters: PlayStation’s decision to get rid of physical discs has proven to be quite unpopular, but the gaming giant has shown no signs of backing down.

Speaking to GamesRadar, analyst Piers Harding-Rolls noted that PlayStation ending physical disc support was always going to happen, especially if keeping the PS6 affordable becomes a priority.
He admits that a $1000 console would be detrimental to Sony’s bottom line. As such, Sony is likely focused on attempting to balance costs ahead of the PS6’s release.
If you come to market with a device that is $1000, you are starting to limit your audience quite significantly.
This is why Piers Harding-Rolls also believes that physical disc support ending in 2028 is more of a generational timing than anything else.

With the PS6 launching as an all-digital console, Sony may be able to reduce the initial cost of entry for its customers. Later, PlayStation could benefit from greater profit margins on each game copy sold, effectively leading to a win-win situation for itself.
In the case of first-party titles, Sony would have much to gain from digital-only sales. As such, this may ultimately lead to a console that doesn’t cost $1000, even if RAM and storage prices continue to get out of hand.
