Sony Finally Breaks Silence One Month Later!

Story Highlight
  • PlayStation has responded to the backlash over its physical disc cancellation.
  • The gaming giant says that its business has not suffered at all despite an ongoing boycott from the fans.
  • Sony also says that it carefully took this decision and will move forward cautiously.

After nearly a full month of silence following its cancellation of physical discs, PlayStation has finally acknowledged the backlash to this decision.

Reporting its latest financial results, PlayStation continues to push for the all-digital future of its gaming brand. Moreover, it states that the ongoing boycott has not led to anything substantial.

Why it matters: This is the first time PlayStation has said anything publicly about its decision. Previously, the gaming giant was simply ignoring any and all criticism.

The death of physical media means many of these countries without PlayStation Store access will be locked out of buying PS6 games via official means.
The physical games sector has been declining for 17 years now.

When asked to discuss the recent outrage over PlayStation’s announcement to end physical disc production, Sony CFO Lin Tao noted that players have reacted to this reveal in various ways.

During the QnA section, the CFO then went on to say that PlayStation made this decision very carefully and made sure to announce it over a year in advance. As such, the gaming giant intends to proceed cautiously with the same decision.

We put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this, and we’re going to cautiously move forward.

The CFO then acknowledged the ongoing boycott regarding this decision. She also stated that the PlayStation business has not been impacted in any meaningful capacity because of player outrage.

It is also said that PlayStation does not expect to see too many repercussions to this decision since most of its players are already “digitized.”

At this point, we are not seeing any impact on our business.

This doesn’t come as too big a surprise since most of PlayStation’s user base is not part of the vocal social media audience. Unfortunately, this also means that there is no hope of Sony walking back on its announcement anytime soon.

It will be interesting to see whether gamers continue their efforts to boycott PlayStation and Sony in the wake of this response. Perhaps some will retaliate with even stronger boycotts now that PlayStation has confirmed its decision to move forward.

What do you think about the CFO’s answer to this situation? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
