Far Cry Extraction Shooter Is No More As Ubisoft Pivots To A New Idea!

Story Highlight
  • Ubisoft has reportedly cancelled a Far Cry extraction shooter.
  • The unannounced project was said to be a franchise spin-off rather than a traditional mainline entry.
  • A new, more ambitious Far Cry game has been approved, and Ubisoft is also working on a new mainline entry.

Ubisoft was previously said to be working on a Far Cry game based on the extraction shooter genre. Recent reports also shared that this title had been rebooted not too long ago, and yet another update has now arrived.

As per the latest word, Ubisoft has now cancelled this game entirely.

Why it matters: Ubisoft’s biggest IPs have struggled to find their footing lately, so this decision highlights yet another part of the French gaming giant’s struggles as it comes to terms with a long-term vision for these franchises.

The Far Cry Series Spans Many Games

According to a new report from Tom Henderson covering Ubisoft’s plans, the publisher has dropped the multiplayer-focused extraction shooter project while giving the green light to a different and supposedly more ambitious entry.

Dubbed Project Kodiak, this title is described as an open-world Far Cry experience with a player-centric approach. This description does not reveal much, and Ubisoft has only recently begun working on the project.

Elsewhere, the next mainline Far Cry entry appears to be receiving positive impressions internally within Ubisoft. The game is said to be quite impressive and may serve as the template for the series’ future.

Far Cry Is Not Going For An Extraction Shooter Approach Anymore

As for the extraction shooter title, Ubisoft’s decision may have been for the better, especially since recent extraction shooters like Marathon haven’t performed the best.

Would you prefer a traditional Far Cry sequel, or should Ubisoft completely rethink the franchise’s formula?
