Be Careful When Buying Retail GTA 6 Copies With Codes In The Box!

Story Highlight
  • Rockstar Games confirms that retail GTA 6 copies will be region-locked on PS5.
  • This means that boxed copies with download codes will be supported in select regions, depending on where they are purchased from.
  • Xbox Series S|X retail copies don’t have any such limitations for now.

As excitement for GTA 6 builds up, many are now growing restless with the wait for an official third trailer.

In the meantime, Rockstar Games has shared an additional tidbit of information regarding the game’s retail distribution. It has now been confirmed that GTA 6 will be region-locked on the PS5.

Why it matters: GTA 6 will be purchased by millions of gamers across the globe, so these restrictions could lead to problems and confusions, especially among PlayStation gamers.

Over on its official support page, Rockstar Games clarifies that GTA 6 codes from specific regions are to used in accounts associated with said regions. The entire list of supported accounts is shown above.

Although regional restrictions for digital games are nothing new, this update is more important to understand for GTA 6 because the game’s retail launch with come with download codes in a box.

On the other hand, physical PlayStation discs typically have no regional restrictions. Anyhow, this means that a retail copy of GTA 6 purchased in the US, which will come with a download code, will not be playable without a US PlayStation account.

Similarly, a copy purchased in a region like the UAE will require an account belonging to the list of supported regions to be redeemed and downloaded. Also, a code from a retail copy purchased in a region like Japan will only work in Japan and will be valid for less than 200 days.

This is different from how gamers can usually insert a disc belonging to any region in a PS5 and play the game without having to worry about regions. Rockstar Games’ support page also confirms that Xbox codes will not have any such regional restrictions.

Because regional restrictions could lead to confusion with retail GTA 6 copies, it may be best to simply stick with digital purchases for the title. Rumors suggest a disc-based version of the game will arrive at some point, but until then, gamers are advised to stay mindful of these regional limitations on PS5.
