PlayStation announced its decision to move away from physical games production a while back, and it currently appears to be weathering the storm of immense backlash from the players.
Despite interest in recently released digital titles like the Black Ops PS4 and PS5 ports, gamers seem adamant on leaving negative comments on PlayStation’s official social media as they attempt to fight back. Amid the chaos, it is now being said that this backlash could be quite effective in the long run.
Why it matters: Backlash against this decision previously forced PlayStation to abandon its Twitter/X account altogether, but even with more posts showing up now, the discourse has yet to stop.
As per leaker Moore’s Law is Dead, developers and publishers typically pay a hefty amount to market their games through PlayStation’s official accounts across various social media.
The leaker’s latest source indicates that most developers would be quite upset looking at the ongoing crisis across PlayStation’s social media, especially if they paid extra money to market a big occasion for specific games.
It is said that developers can even pay thousands of dollars to secure specific time slots for PlayStation’s tweets, something that is likely to add further to developer dismay. In the worst cases, the constant backlash from users could worsen PlayStation’s relationship with developers and publishers.
For instance, as Moore’s Law is Dead points out, Rockstar Games would not be too happy if promotional tweets about GTA 6 received constant negative reactions.
If there’s a specific time you want your PlayStation tweet to drop, you often have to pay thousands of dollars. If this backlash happened when my game was releasing, I would be very upset with Sony.
