CDPR Aims To Avoid Cyberpunk 2077's Launch Disaster With This Move!

Story Highlight
  • CD Projekt Red co-CEO confirms that The Witcher 4 is already running on all target platforms.
  • The studio achieved this two years ahead of launch as the RPG’s development continues at full force.
  • It aims to prevent the Cyberpunk 2077 launch disaster, as its development was mainly PC-driven.

CD Projekt Red is currently working on multiple projects at the same time, but almost all eyes are on its Witcher 4 project. While there is a lot of anticipation among fans, many gamers are still wary about how its launch will turn out compared to Cyberpunk 2077.

Rest assured, CDPR is making sure it does not repeat any mistakes it made that led to the disaster that was Night City in its early days. In a new interview, the studio co-CEO has confirmed that The Witcher 4 already runs on all target platforms two years ahead of launch.

Why it matters: Cyberpunk 2077 mainly turned out to be such a disaster because its development was PC-driven and consoles were neglected. However, CD Projekt Red has now ensured that The Witcher 4’s development continues smoothly across all target platforms.

The Witcher 4 has to surpass its predecessor in every way to be a success.

Speaking to Game Developer, CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michal Nowakowski mentions that you can launch The Witcher 4 on all target platforms right now as development continues in full force.

You come to the studio, you launch Witcher 4 right now. You can launch it on PC. You can launch it on PS5. You can launch it on Xbox Series X, and it’s going to run.

It’s a huge deal because Cyberpunk 2077 was mainly developed for PC and then scaled down for consoles. The studio successfully pulled that strategy off with Witcher 3, but Night City’s large scale proved too much for the developers to downscale on consoles successfully.

As a result, we ended up with a badly optimized mess on consoles at launch. The CEO says CDPR won’t take any chances moving forward.

CDPR is pouring a majority of its resources into developing The Witcher 4.

Unlike with Cyberpunk, CDPR stops Witcher 4 development if it runs into any issues on any single platform and does not continue until the problem is fixed.

Regardless, the RPG is aiming for a 2028 launch, so a lot still needs to be done before it’s ready.
