The Streaming Platform's Mobile App Saw A 50% Increase In Users During The Reveal.

Story Highlight
  • Netflix mobile viewership rose 35% in the US thanks to the GTA 6 extended gameplay reveal.
  • According to Sensor Tower, the streaming platform saw a 50% surge in users compared to the previous 12 Thursdays.
  • Web traffic was also an incredible 125% higher than the average, causing Netflix to crash.

Following its extended showcase, GTA 6 is currently dominating all the headlines in the gaming world. The game’s expansive and detailed open world has stunned fans around the globe, and the title is set to be the biggest sandbox Rockstar has ever created.

The studio’s decision to premiere the gameplay reveal on Netflix received criticism when it was first announced, with many claiming Rockstar was just looking to make a quick buck. However, the partnership has seemingly worked out well for both sides according to new data.

Why it matters: Both Netflix and Rockstar have gotten exactly what they wanted from this partnership, showcasing how this marketing strategy was a master stroke from the company.

GTA 6 Netflix
Netflix mobile app users in the US alone increased by 50% at the time of the reveal.

According to data from Sensor Tower, Netflix US mobile viewership surged by 35% hour-over-hour when the GTA 6 extended reveal premiered on the platform. The hype around the reveal also resulted in Netflix crashing, as web traffic was 125% above the average rate.

If those numbers aren’t enough, the analysis firm also reported that Netflix mobile app users increased by a whopping 50% when compared to the average user count at the same time on the previous 12 Thursdays.

Sensor Tower senior analyst Abe Yousef revealed that Netflix benefited from the GTA 6 gameplay reveal as it expanded the platform’s status as an overarching entertainment hub while also bringing in sign-ups from non-subscribers. Hence, from the looks of it, Netflix got a pretty good return on its $100 million investment, while Rockstar was able to reach a new consumer demographic thanks to the streaming service.

GTA 6
The Rockstar title has set new standards for the gaming industry with the gameplay reveal alone.

With over 600,000 animations, detailed mechanics for activities like working out, and a new criminal profiling system the franchise has never seen before, the hype for GTA 6 has reached new heights following the gameplay reveal. Therefore, both Netflix and Rockstar have walked away from this partnership with big wins.
