PlayStation’s recent physical disc announcement drew the most criticism the gaming giant has seen in many years. Things got so out of hand that fans began cancelling PS Plus subscriptions, including many hardcore PlayStation gamers.
PlayStation also faced quite a bit of backlash on social media, leading to several days of silence on Twitter. Interestingly, however, PlayStation appears to have been bailed out by the launch of Treyarch’s Black Ops ports on PS4 and PS5.
Why it matters: The gaming industry was seemingly coming together unanimously to oppose PlayStation’s decision, so it came as quite a shock to see fans change their minds all of a sudden.
PlayStation confirmed the end of its physical disc cancellation on the first of July, and Activision launched its Black Ops ports for PS4 and PS5 just over a week later.
Soon after these ports went live, multiple fans confirmed that they had repurchased PS Plus alongside the two titles. PlayStation also offered both games at a huge discount for PS Plus subscribers, making both purchases all the more enticing.
One look at Twitter showcases multiple instances of the same folks who were criticizing PlayStation and vowing to boycott the platform, later rushing out to purchase the Black Ops ports.
Even hardcore Xbox-centric Twitter users like ZakenKloot purchased the games and PS Plus despite the backlash. Reports have also noted that the two games on PS4 and PS5 alone are outnumbering Black Ops 7 on all platforms.
Looking at PlayStation’s official tweet on the subject, the like-to-reply ratio is also much better than past tweets.
Ultimately, while the backlash hasn’t completely faded into obscurity, fans seem to have latched on to the Black Ops ports without much regard for Sony’s treatment of physical media.
Of course, it goes without saying, but this is also a testament to the quality of the two aforementioned Call of Duty games, which have aged quite gracefully over the years.
