- The gaming industry has experienced a total of nearly 11,000 layoffs in 2026 so far.
- These are already higher than in 2025, with more expected in the next 2 months.
- Even the developers who worked on successful games don’t seem safe.
Gaming industry employees have had it rough for the last few years. Almost every major company and studio has laid off at least a bit of its workforce, and this trend doesn’t seem to be stopping due to high budgets and growing costs.
In 2026, the gaming industry faced 11,000 layoffs, but what’s even worse is that this number is already higher than the entire 2025, and there are still 2 months to go. The worst examples were EA, Ubisoft, and Xbox.
Why it matters: The industry is so volatile and uncertain now that there’s no more job security. Even if the developers make a successful game, there is no guarantee that they’ll retain their jobs long-term.

ASGC Games Industry Layoffs Tracker highlights that there have been a total of 10,977 layoffs so far. For context, in 2025, 9,197 jobs were cut, but 2024 was still the worst, which saw over 15,000 layoffs in total.
Things aren’t halting here since there are still 2 months left, and major companies, including Xbox, will be laying off more employees. The tracker predicts that this year will end with a total of around 13K job cuts.

This again brings up the topic of where the industry is headed right now. Xbox and EA’s restructuring has cost so much; even PlayStation recently laid off Ghost of Yotei devs, which was a widely successful title.
