Ubisoft Is Firing 20% Of The Team Behind AC Black Flag Resynced Despite Its Success

The Company Is Firing 200-Plus Employees Worldwide.

Story Highlight
  • Ubisoft is continuing to restructure the company, firing over 200 employees worldwide.
  • The Singapore studio, responsible for Black Flag Resynced, is losing 20% of its workforce.
  • On the other hand, Finnish studio RedLynx has been shut down permanently.

After a series of underwhelming entries in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Ubisoft finally figured out the formula and ended up producing Black Flag Resynced. The remake, built from the ground up, has turned out to be a critical and commercial success for the company, selling 2 million copies in just one day.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced also peaked as the most successful title in the franchise on Steam, hitting 100k concurrent players at launch. However, despite exceeding the expectations of the higher-ups, the studio behind the game is still losing employees.

Why it matters: Cutting jobs from a studio that delivered a title so successful it reached its annual commercial targets in two weeks won’t help Ubisoft retain talent no matter how much it restructures.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced met its annual sales target in just two weeks.

As reported by GamesIndustry, Ubisoft Singapore, the studio behind Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, is losing 70 employees in a new round of job cuts. Ubisoft is reorganising the company again as part of its creative house initiative, and the developer is set to lose 20% of its workforce as a result.

At Ubisoft Singapore, 70 positions have been impacted to align the studio with upcoming production needs. The studio remains an important part of Ubisoft’s global production organization.

In addition to the Singapore studio, Ubisoft is also closing down the Finnish studio RedLynx, laying off 52 people in total. In its statement, the gaming giant thanked both of the studios for their contribution to the company and emphasized that Ubisoft Singapore will remain an integral part of the organization.

Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time the developers behind Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced have been laid off despite the game’s success. Back in June, the company’s Barcelona studio, which supported the remake’s development, lost 51 employees in the ongoing restructure, with Ubisoft denying them even minimum compensation after the game had succeeded commercially.

The Barcelona studio, which supported the game’s development, also lost 51 devs a month before the remake launched.

In total, Ubisoft has laid off over 200 employees in the latest round of job cuts, as it also reduced its Germany-based workforce by 100 employees.

Do you think the Singapore studio should have lost employees after the successful launch of Black Flag Resynced? Is Ubisoft going to benefit from this restructuring? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
