Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has been a tremendous success for Ubisoft, by all accounts. It reportedly achieved the company’s 1-year sales target in just 2 weeks and has been among Steam’s best-sellers ever since its launch. It also outsold Assassin’s Creed Shadows in their respective pre-sale windows, and had the best launch to any Assassin’s Creed game in recent history. It is not an overstatement to say that Ubisoft knocked it out of the park with that one.
And yet, despite Black Flag Resynced’s superb performance, its success was somewhat telegraphed. The original Black Flag was a beloved entry into the franchise and had a cult following on its own. While it was criticized somewhat for its plot that pushed the Assassin’s brotherhood to the side, it more than made up for it with its stellar story, gameplay mechanics, and memorable characters. The foundation for Resynced was already solid, and fans knew what to expect going into it.

Where Ubisoft Stands
Perhaps, that is what Ubisoft needs from this point forward. It is no secret that Ubisoft has been struggling massively recently, with multiple studio closures and massive waves of layoffs. Even employees of Ubisoft Barcelona, who worked on much of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, were laid off immediately following the game’s successful launch. The Assassin’s Creed franchise itself, while still a very valuable IP, has been dwindling in terms of fan reception and sales success.
After Assassin’s Creed Syndicate launched to a mixed reception in 2015, Ubisoft decided to change the formula. Maybe they gathered inspiration from the immensely successful Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and decided to implement some of its RPG elements into their own games. That decision changed the trajectory of Ubisoft and its biggest franchise.
A Tiring Formula
The four successive entries, Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, and Shadows, were massive games that took huge, ambitious swings, but missed more often than not. They were successful financially, sure, but hardcore fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise never really accepted them as mainline AC games.
The result of this indifference was dwindling sales and a public opinion that did not particularly favor Ubisoft. That feeling was not limited to Assassin’s Creed alone, but also spread through their entire lineup of games. Fans quickly grew weary of Ubisoft’s cash-grab tactics and underwhelming performance, which is why public sentiment towards Ubisoft is largely negative nowadays. That is not helped by the fact that Ubisoft keeps axing fan-favorite franchises and laying off scores of employees.
The situation calls for something radical, and Ubisoft may have stumbled upon the solution accidentally.
The Solution
I say stumble because I don’t really think Ubisoft planned for Black Flag Resynced to be a massive success, at least not as big as it clearly has been. Ubisoft probably took a swing at this remake since it was the safe bet, and they knew they needed a win under their belt. However, as evidenced by their recent financial earnings call, they were overwhelmed by the reception that this remake actually got.
Now, apparently, there are a few more remakes already in the pipeline, with Assassin’s Creed 1 being the more likely next step. However, reports say that Ubisoft was waiting to gauge the response to Black Flag Resynced before moving forward with any of the other remakes. It is safe to say that they need to get working on those remakes full steam ahead.
So, the solution I propose is pretty simple: GIVE US MORE REMAKES! Wouldn’t you want to experience Renaissance Italy again and don the cloak of Ezio Auditore? I dare say an Assassin’s Creed Rogue Resynced would be a phenomenal idea since it’s the most underrated title in the series and deserves more love.
Even if you look past the Assassin’s Creed series, I think the Prince of Persia franchise deserves some love. I would also like to jump back into Splinter Cell, for what it’s worth. The idea is simple, and it would work; Ubisoft just needs to stay true to the original game as they did with Black Flag Resynced, but just bring the mechanics and graphics into 2026. They simply can’t lose with that formula.
Of course, leaning into remakes does not mean you just make repetitive cash-grab garbage and try to sell it in the name of nostalgia. There needs to be care and attention put into every remake, and it shouldn’t stray too far from the source. Ubisoft also needs to straighten its course with its mainline games, such as Assassin’s Creed Hexe, and take a long look in the mirror as to why fans are gravitating towards old Ubisoft games and not the new ones.
