Gamers Showing A Clear Preference For Older Games!

Story Highlight
  • An analyst says gamers are just too interested in playing new versions of existing titles.
  • This comment comes after the Black Ops ports topped PS5 charts in the US for last week.
  • Other re-releases, like Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, have also garnered a lot of attention recently.

The games industry has seen plenty of interesting titles in 2026. A slew of new releases, such as 007 First Light and Forza Horizon 6, have garnered player interest this year, but older titles have also shined anew on more than one occasion this year.

The most recent titles generating buzz among gamers are the Black Ops remasters and Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. In fact, their performance has led to an analyst declaring the fact that audiences seem too interested in playing old games.

Why it matters: The trend of pursuing re-releases has been embraced by practically all studios in the industry, and the latest data shows exactly why this is the case.

As per analyst Mat Piscatella, the Black Ops remasters were among the top 10 most-played PS5 games in the US last year. In fact, Black Ops 2 topped the charts, beating out the likes of Fortnite, NBA 2K26, Roblox, and Marvel Rivals.

Discussing this phenomenon, the analyst admitted that the PS5 appears to have become a “Call of Duty box” for most people. He also highlighted the point that most gamers seem too interested in playing updated versions of older titles.

Whether it be remasters or remakes, these re-releases typically perform incredibly well. Recent releases, such as Halo Campaign Evolved and Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, further serve to highlight this trend.

Moreover, even in the top 10 most-played PS5 games, GTA 5 Remastered holds the fifth position, showcasing the current value of legacy titles.

Seems like old updated games may be what the mass market really wants to play on consoles these days.

Black Ops Re-Releases Have Been Massive

Ubisoft recently admitted that re-releases can prove more profitable than new titles, so Mat Piscatella’s point holds a lot of validity. The trend of remakes has even led to Nintendo chasing re-releases, showcasing that this phenomenon isn’t limited merely to PlayStation and Xbox platforms.

Ultimately, consumer behavior shows a clear preference for these re-releases, so publishers and developers will likely continue to chase more remakes and remasters as time goes on.
