PlayStation Blackout: Sony Reports Growth Despite Protest

Story Highlight
  • Sony reported PlayStation growth despite the “No Disc, No Buy” and PS5 Blackout protests.
  • PlayStation monthly active users reportedly hit a record high in September, even as hardware sales declined.
  • Sony’s aggregate results do not establish the independent impact, if any, of the protest.

Sony’s latest PlayStation results show strong network activity during the period of the No Disc, No Buy and PS5 Blackout campaigns. Those campaigns criticized Sony’s approach to physical media and urged changes in buying or playing habits, but Sony’s aggregate financial disclosures do not quantify their participation.

What Sony’s Latest Numbers Reveal About the PS5 Blackout

Push Square argues the campaigns made no visible difference, citing Sony’s quarterly results. The figures show overall performance, however, not a controlled measure of what would have happened without the protests.

Sony reported 127 million monthly active PlayStation users in September 2026, eight million more than a year earlier and two million above the preceding quarter. These totals do not establish whether individual protesters participated or influenced the outcome.

Strong engagement does not resolve concerns about disc availability or digital ownership, and financial data alone cannot demonstrate how Sony weighed the campaign internally. Engagement and buying behavior are different measures, which matters when evaluating a purchase boycott.

Boycott participation hasn’t been quantified publicly, limiting any assessment of its effects.

Sony’s quarterly results reflect performance across its businesses, not just PlayStation. A companywide profit increase should not be presented as a direct measure of the boycott’s impact.

Sony also reported that digital downloads accounted for 78% of full-game software unit sales in the quarter, up six percentage points year over year. Physical software revenue nonetheless rose compared with the same period last year.

The campaigns reflect broader concern over physical releases, while the results underline Sony’s continued reliance on digital spending. Strong business results and consumer criticism can coexist; neither automatically cancels the other.

The results show PlayStation’s overall engagement grew; the independent effect of the Blackout and No Disc, No Buy campaigns remains unmeasured.
