- PlayStation has begun sending out notifications, asking users to sell their PS5s via an ongoing trade-in offer.
- The gaming giant is offering up to $400 for a base PS5 with 2 controllers.
- This offer comes as electronics companies worldwide struggle with resources like memory and storage due to AI demand.
Recently, Xbox sent out emails and messages to its users, asking whether some of them would be interested in selling consoles that hadn’t received much attention lately.
Many found this messaging odd, especially at a time when demand for Xbox consoles was at an all-time low. Interestingly enough, PlayStation appears to be following suit with similar messages for its users.
Why it matters: Memory shortages worldwide have stretched hardware manufacturers thin, so it seems many are rushing to secure resources from wherever possible.

As shared on Resetera, select gamers have received notification via the PlayStation application regarding trade-in offers from Sony.
Users have been told that they can get up to $400 in cash when trading in a PS5 console with 2 or more controllers, although the exact amount would depend on the condition of the console itself.
Note that this offer is likely being sent out to PlayStation users who haven’t used their consoles in a while. This may be Sony’s attempt to repurposing underutilized PS5 hardware into refurbished consoles, something that may be proving challenging due to the ongoing memory shortages.

Also, keep in mind that with the arrival of GTA 6, demand for the PS5 should stay consistently high over the next few months. Therefore, the more PS5s Sony has available to sell, the better.
This is one reason the gaming giant may want to secure underutilized PS5s from customers.
