- The Borderlands franchise has become one of the few gaming IPs to sell 100 million copies.
- Gearbox confirmed more content is coming to Borderlands 4 next year as Year 1 of DLC wraps up.
- The studio is also planning the next iteration in the IP, asking fans for their feedback to influence development.
Borderlands 4 launched to a flurry of controversy last year despite recording the best opening month in the entire series. The mixed reception mostly stemmed from optimization issues that made the game run poorly even on good hardware.
Gearbox now confirms that Borderlands 4 has been a huge success for the IP. The series has hit a staggering 100 million units sold globally since its inception in 2009. The studio also teases lofty plans for Borderlands 4 Year 2 and the future of the franchise moving forward.
Why it matters: As the Borderlands franchise celebrates this massive milestone, it appears Gearbox aims to work on a new installment while simultaneously bringing more Borderlands 4 DLC content next year.

Gearbox confirmed the milestone on Twitter, along with a blog post that details the future of the franchise. The studio plans to work on the next iteration of Borderlands, so the developers have turned to passionate fans to help influence its direction with feedback.
We’re also taking a bigger look at the franchise as a whole. Where can we take it next? What characters do you want to spend more time with? What stories deserve a payoff?
-Gearbox.
The studio also warns that Borderlands 5 could take many years before it’s ready to be shown. Therefore, we may have to wait until around 2030 for a release given the current AAA ecosystem.
All that said, big plans take time, and we need some room to work. You can trust that we’ll talk more when the time is right. Now is your chance to influence what we’ll say.

It’s also unclear what Borderlands 4 DLC content is being planned for Year 2. Gearbox has only confirmed weekly activity refreshes and community challenges for now, but we could hear about the rest soon.
Do you think we’ll get Borderlands 5 sometime before the next decade, or is that too unrealistic to expect at this point? Will the game explore a whole new direction? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
