Rumors pointed to Xbox working on a disc-to-digital feature for a while, and as of today, this program has officially received new details. In fact, Xbox has also confirmed that it will be available later this month.
Why it matters: The disc-to-digital program sounds quite innovative and could prove to be pivotal to the Xbox ecosystem moving forward.
Xbox’s long-awaited disc-to-digital feature is now moving into preview, with Xbox Insiders getting access first by the end of August.
The preview program is designed around eligible physical Xbox games. Based on reports, players will be able to use a supported disc as proof of ownership and convert that game into a digital entitlement connected to their Xbox account.
Once converted into a digital version, the game can even be shared through the license tied to the original account. Similarly, the digital version can benefit from Xbox Play Anywhere support.
All of this happens while the disc retains functionality. If the disc is sold afterward, the digital license is transferred to the Microsoft account of the new owner. Microsoft has yet to announce specific games for this program, but it is said that thousands of titles are already supported.
As such, fans should expect to see this feature for most Xbox One and Series S|X titles.

Because the feature is so ambitious and new, gamers might run into hiccups at first. However, given the industry’s shift away from discs, this initiative should come in handy if everyone eventually moves on from physical games.
