  • It will help play physical games as digital licenses on the Project Helix.

Microsoft is heading quickly towards the next generation of its hardware, Project Helix, which is going to be a PC-console hybrid. While we have a mix of some confirmed and rumored specifications, it is going to be an all-digital console.

A new report reveals that Xbox is currently working on something called Project Positron, which will help convert physical games into digital licenses that can then be used with Project Helix, not rendering physical discs useless.

Why it matters: While physical media has seen a huge decline in numbers over the years, many people still prefer it. This could be a great way to preserve physical media while also utilizing all digital games’ features.

Project Positron aims to convert physical to digital licenses for Helix

Windows Central has learned from its sources about the Project Positron. As digital media takes over, the next-gen consoles will reportedly be disc-less, but Microsoft is still planning to preserve discs using this project.

The details on it are scarce, but for existing users with a disc drive Xbox, they’ll be able to convert their physical media into a digital license that can be used with Helix, as it will also reportedly be backward compatible.

Anyhow, for now, it is better to take this with a grain of salt as these details are yet to be confirmed. Additionally, this tech will also require more licensing, and it would grow the costs, which are already high due to memory prices.
