- Images of GTA 6’s physical copies show that the game does not support any online functionality.
- The title has also been advertised as a single-player experience thus far, with no mention of an online component.
- GTA 6 Online will launch at a later date, but this mode could arrive as a standalone release, similar to Rockstar Games’ separate launch for Red Dead Online.
GTA 6 is now just days away from its full release, and excitement is palpable around the globe. Physical copies of the game have also been spotted across various stores worldwide, and although they don’t contain a disc, they may have revealed an interesting piece of information.
It would appear that Rockstar Games may have plans to launch GTA 6 Online as a standalone experience, at least going by the information printed on the physical disc packaging.
Why it matters: GTA Online remains the team’s greatest asset by far, so Rockstar Games will be careful with how it handles the sequel.

Looking at the rear of the GTA 6 physical packaging (via Twitter/X), the game is said to support single-player gameplay. It also does not make any mention of online play, implying that players are receiving the single-player content only when purchasing GTA 6.
Although the box mentions online features, those are related to the additional downloadable content present in the more expensive editions of the game. The packaging even lacks any trademarks or logos related to GTA Online.
Similarly, the physical copy lacks the typical PS Plus disclaimer included with games that have multiplayer components. Of course, this alone isn’t all that surprising.
Rockstar Games has marketed GTA 6 as a purely single-player experience free of any microtransactions thus far, which is also how the game is described on the official PlayStation Store. The lack of any talk related to GTA 6 Online means that the team might indeed have very interesting plans for this mode.

With live-service titles like Fortnite coming to life with their own in-game events, celebrity and IP crossovers, and more, the successor to GTA Online could aim for a similar experience beyond the traditional chaos of Grand Theft Auto’s gameplay. How the game is launched could also be part of these plans.
Note that Rockstar Games already offered Red Dead Online as a standalone release in the past, so something similar for GTA 6 Online would not be too shocking. Fans have even speculated on this being the case in the past, and signs now point toward this theory coming to fruition.
Of course, GTA 6 Online could still be free for existing owners of the game, even if it ends up being a completely separate release that isn’t tied to the game.
