- Nvidia’s new DLSS 5 version is set to debut on September 9th With NBA 2K27.
- It offers new filters, 3D-guided neural rendering, and additional features, but there’s a catch.
- Enabling DLSS 5’s filters will cause a massive 50-60% drop in performance.
Upscaling has become a core component of game optimization in the current industry. As games have become more graphically demanding, they’ve become more difficult to run as well, so developers have been relying on upscaling tech.
DLSS is unanimously agreed to be the best upscaling tech, with solid improvements each generation, but the latest DLSS 5 is rather controversial. It introduces AI filters that will cost about a 50-60% performance drop when enabled.
Why it matters: These filters add a rather rigorous AI upscaling to the image quality, which makes the games look very different from their intended art style, which hasn’t sat too well with the fans overall.
Nvidia has announced that DLSS 5 officially releases on September 9th with NBA 2K27. The company has confirmed that over the 6 months since it first showcased the technology, they’ve been able to make it at least 5x faster.
However, that doesn’t mean that it will offer top-tier performance. In fact, if you enable the AI filters, Nvidia says there will be a 50-60% performance drop on average, which means if you were getting 60 FPS, they’ll drop to 30.

Since this new rendering tech is at the core of this update, this is a rather letdown. You can, of course, disable them completely and use the regular version, which will, in theory, provide better quality and performance.
But this is something Nvidia has marketed a lot, and it doesn’t make sense for most games. However, for older titles that haven’t been remastered and support DLSS, this will feel like a remaster, but the list will be quite small.
