- PlayStation recently confirmed that it will soon abandon physical game discs.
- A report suggests Xbox Project Helix will also be a digital-only console.
- Microsoft is said to be working on a licensing system to ensure current owners of physical discs will be able to play their games on Project Helix.
Following its official announcement, fans are still waiting on Microsoft to learn more about Xbox Project Helix. Meanwhile, the rumor mill has picked up the pace, discussing potential pricing, hardware capabilities, the possibility of Microsoft shipping the console without a controller, and more.
A new report also suggests that Xbox Project Helix will be a digital-only console.
Why it matters: PlayStation recently announced its shift away from physical discs, practically confirming the fact that the PS6 will be a digital-only console. It seems Xbox intends on following suit.

In a new report, Windows Central notes that sources suggest Xbox Project Helix will drop the disc drive.
Of course, this decision isn’t too surprising, considering Microsoft’s focus on Game Pass and digital distribution of content for Xbox Play Anywhere support. Xbox also adopted the digital-only format with the Series S many years ago.
Microsoft’s next-generation console will drop the disc drive, too.

Ultimately, this means that both PlayStation and Xbox will leave behind physical games for good during the next generation. How big of an impact this will have on the games industry as a whole remains to be seen, but the dominance of digital games certainly makes a strong case for this decision.

Previously, it was also reported that Microsoft was working on a games licensing system dubbed Project Positron to ensure owners of physical Xbox One or Series X copies would be able to benefit from backwards compatibility on Project Helix.
This report further supports the notion that Microsoft is going all in on digital games in the coming years.
