  • The CEO explained that it’s a tough topic due to the company’s publishing strength.
  • The gaming giant is going to be thoughtful about each title from now on.

Ever since the appointment of Asha Sharma as the new Xbox CEO, the mandate around exclusivity has been brought up many times by players. The new boss has stated that she hears fans and is looking at the current strategy to see if it needs changing.

Reports have suggested that Sharma is internally considering a return to exclusivity for first-party titles. Now, a new interview with Bloomberg suggests that a return to Xbox exclusives could be very likely.

Why it matters: The gaming world is a better place with Xbox going toe-to-toe with Sony, and exclusives like Forza Horizon 6 are a sure-fire way to achieve that.

While talking to Bloomberg Tech, Asha Sharma declared that exclusive content and services are a must for Xbox because it is increasingly becoming a platform. The new CEO explained that it’s a tough topic as Xbox is the second biggest publisher in the world, and to maintain that position, it must ship games to a larger audience.

We are increasingly becoming a platform, and in order to be a platform, you must have exclusive content and services. We are looking into that. We have to be very thoughtful about each title.

However, Sharma realises the importance of exclusive titles for the brand, and consequently, the multi-platform strategy is under review. The Xbox boss revealed that the company is looking at the exclusivity problem very closely and thinking thoroughly about each game and where it ends up.

The success of Forza Horizon 6 has given the gaming giant another reason to pull back the multiplatform strategy, as the racing simulator has sold over 6 million copies despite being on Game Pass. The title has also caused a surge in Xbox Series X|S sales because of its console exclusivity on the platform.

The success of Forza Horizon 6 has showcased that Xbox players want exclusives.

Hence, the fan demand is there, and it will be interesting to see what Asha Sharma does with titles like Fable and Forza Horizon 6, which are still set to launch on PS5.
