Still Low For A High-Budget Live Service Game!

Story Highlight
  • Marathon’s player count has increased to 40K amid season 2 and free-to-play week.
  • Previously, the player count had fallen below that of Destiny 2, which is at the end of its life.
  • Still, these numbers aren’t satisfactory for a high-budget live service game.

Bungie has been under fire for the last few days ever since it announced the end of development on Destiny 2. The studio is currently focused on its extraction shooter, Marathon, which also seems to be losing grip quite early.

Marathon recorded a decent start when it hit 80K players at launch; however, lately it has been averaging just around 10K. Now, amid the new season update and a free-to-play week, the player count has jumped to 40K.

Why it matters: Considering the player base had faltered that badly, the current number sounds good; however, it should be noted that it’s a high-budget live service title, so even these numbers won’t be satisfactory.

Marathon player count increased amid the new season and free week

Bungie announced that it will be having an open play week for Marathon, which coincides with the beginning of the game’s season 2. Both these factors have led the players to the title, taking the player base to around 40K

Now, the majority of these players could just be there to see the improvements with the new season, taking advantage of the free-to-play week, but the studio would be hoping that they’d stick around for much longer.

These numbers are still low for a high-budget live service game

Nonetheless, Bungie has shown solid intent that it will keep on supporting the game for a long time. Also, now that Destiny is not in the picture, it is likely putting all of its resources towards the extraction shooter.

But this doesn’t guarantee that it will retain the current number of players, as it could fall again once the open week is done. Considering Sony recorded an impairment loss of $565 million from Bungie, things don’t look good.
