A Long Bittersweet Journey Comes To An End!

Story Highlight
  • After 9 long years, Bungie has finally decided to end active development on Destiny 2.
  • It will receive its final update, called Monument of Triumph, on June 9 with many changes.
  • After which, the game will be kept playable, but won’t receive live service updates.

Bungie released Destiny 2 in 2016 as the sequel to its first game, despite the reception being mostly mixed among the audience and the critics. Surprisingly, the sequel was a hit among the fans and continued to do well for many years.

However, for the past few years, especially since Sony took over Bungie, the game has been in a dire state with negative reviews and a falling player base. And now, after 9 years, the studio is ending development on Destiny 2.

Why it matters: Many people saw this coming, considering the studio now had a bigger team working on Marathon than Destiny 2. It was only a matter of time before they would have pulled the plug on the long-standing title.

Bungie has officially decided to end Destiny 2’s active development

Bungie has officially announced that Destiny 2 will receive one last update on June 9, titled Monument of Triumph, after which it will be put to rest for good, and focus will shift towards other projects.

Despite the end of live service updates and active development, the game will still be kept playable, just like the original Destiny has been to date. The team has promised many changes for its last ever update.

The title saw many ups and downs over the period of 9 years

Anyhow, Bungie as a studio hasn’t been doing too well since the PlayStation acquisition, considering there have been layoffs, complaints of toxic behaviors, and creative differences, and that has been evident.

The studio’s latest release, Marathon, was off to a decent start, but that too has now lost so many players that its player count is even lower than Destiny 2, whose active development will end in just a few weeks.
