Xbox CEO Asha Sharma To Reevaluate Exclusivity Strategy For Future

Could Xbox Return To Exclusivity Again?

Story Highlight
  • Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed plans to reevaluate the brand’s exclusivity strategy later on.
  • This is not the first time the CEO has specifically pointed to the brand’s exclusivity as a key focus.
  • Rapidly evolving plans could see Xbox widening the gap between first-party releases on its own platforms and third-party consoles.

Xbox has long abandoned exclusivity for its first-party releases, even going as far as bringing the famous Halo, Forza, and Gears trio to PlayStation.

However, because CEO Asha Sharma has made significant changes to Microsoft’s gaming division in a short while, many fans have not completely lost hope. In a surprising update, the CEO also teased that the gaming giant will at least revisit its stance on exclusivity for the future.

Why it matters: As the new CEO of Xbox, Asha Sharma is keen on making as many changes as necessary to steer the brand in the right direction, and this decision seems to be part of this broader plan.

The New Xbox Leadership Is Making Sweeping Changes

Asha Sharma recently held a meeting with her team and discussed key Xbox topics, including the return to exclusivity. She stated that there’s no guarantee exclusives would return, but the team will revisit prior decisions at some point.

The new Xbox CEO holds a similar stance on other subjects, such as AI. Asha Sharma intends to share more information with her team and the public over time, reflecting the new Xbox division’s learnings and growth.

Along the way, we will reevaluate our approach to exclusivity windowing and AI, and share more as we learn and decide.

It should also be noted that this is not the first time the Xbox CEO has acknowledged the need for an exclusive library. Moreover, insiders recently reported that such discussions were being held within the company.

Of course, it’s difficult to imagine Xbox going back to its old ways of first-party releases after committing to PC and other platforms. A game like Forza Horizon 5 also selling 5 million units on PS5 likely serves as great proof in favor of the multiplatform approach.

However, it is entirely possible that Asha Sharma will make the gap between Xbox and multiplatform releases wider to at least incentivize adoption of the brand.
